Spotlight on Claiborne Parish Oil Boom History: A. E. Wilder — Our “Cornfield Geologist”
As America raced into the great oil boom of the early 1900s — from the legendary Spindletop gusher in Texas to the roaring fields of Oklahoma — Claiborne Parish had its own quiet trailblazer shaping our parish’s story.
His name was A. E. Wilder, remembered in our local history as a “cornfield geologist.” That was the old timers’ way of describing a self taught, boots on the ground expert — someone who learned to read the land not from textbooks, but from years of walking fields, studying rock outcrops, and trusting a sharp eye and sharper instincts. Wilder was one of the first to recognize that Claiborne Parish held promise beneath its rolling pine hills. His observations and encouragement helped draw early prospectors to the area, placing our parish squarely within the broader wave of exploration sweeping across the South after Spindletop changed the nation forever.
When drilling began here, Wilder’s instincts proved right. Rigs went up, workers arrived, and Claiborne Parish experienced its own chapter of the American oil story — one that brought new jobs, new businesses, and a burst of energy that reshaped our community.
Today, his legacy lives on in the stories preserved by the Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum and in the pride we take in remembering the people who helped put our parish on the map. Wilder didn’t just study the land — he helped change the future of Claiborne Parish.
We’re asking our community to come together and support the Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum through Give for Good. Your donation — whether large or small — will help us create a brand-new military exhibit honoring the history and the soldiers of Claiborne Parish who served in the armed forces after World War II. This is our moment to stand united and recognize their service in a meaningful way. But we need your support to bring this project to life. This is your opportunity to give what you can.
The fundraising drive runs April 21 through May 5. To donate you will need to go online and make a donation with your credit card. To do this, go to www.giveforgoodnla.org. Find the Herbert S.
