Mission Statement:
To preserve, perpetuate & promote the contributions of Africana early settlers and descendants, and contemporary African Americans in Hawaii. Vision Statement:
To honor the historical event of the birthplace of the 44th U.S. President and to share a larger narrative about Africana Hawaiian early settlers' and descendents' contributions to island history through educational in-school and cultural programs for youth, residents and visitors. Established:
October 1997, Honolulu, Hawaii. Internal Revenue Certificate 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In February 2018, the Board of Directors voted to take on the tradename “Obama Hawaiian Africana Museum,” to honor the birthplace of the 44th U.S. The parent entity is, “African American Diversity Cultural Center Hawaii (AADCCH)". Museum Legacy & Initiatives:
Until 1997, no institution had acknowledged the history of Africana people’s contributions to Hawaii history, including in the World War II Pacific Theater. Presently, there is not a historical marker (site) in Hawaii marking the birthplace of the 44th U.S. President, the first Black president and Commander-in-Chief of the United States. One of the key goals of the Obama Hawaiian Africana Museum's Board of Directors is to purchase the childhood home of Obama to honor the historical figure, the 44th President, and to create a permanent museum location highlighting 200 years of Africana people’s historical contributions to the state of Hawaii and the world.
