Deborah Colton Gallery Deborah Colton Gallery is founded on being an innovative showcase for ongoing presentation and promo

The primary goal of the Deborah Colton Gallery is the creation of a continually evolving innovative showcase for the ongoing presentation and international promotion of strong historical and visionary contemporary artists worldwide. While living in Asia for eight years, Deborah Colton's first emanation was a virtual gallery, starting in 1998, whose main focus was to create an awareness and appreci

ation for the multi-media talents of artists from Thailand, Japan, China and throughout Asia. Moving to Houston in 2000 after living in Tokyo and Bangkok, Deborah Colton first curated and presented several public space exhibitions in conjunction with many prestigious art non-profits both from the United States and Asia. The Deborah Colton Gallery opened FotoFest of 2004 and since then has been continually presenting significant national and international contemporary art exhibitions. As part of the Gallery's continued aspiration to provide a visual forum which connects both national and international artists to create an awareness and help make positive social change, the Deborah Colton Gallery has focused on many key cities, including having been an exhibitor in the first Art Fair in Abu Dhabi in November of 2007. In 2008 Deborah Colton Gallery debuted the exhibition titled Qatar Narratives consisting of contemporary artists from Qatar in conjunction with Consular Forum 2008, honoring the Kingdom of Qatar. In 2009 the Gallery similarly honored Spain and in 2010, Mexico. During FotoFest 2012, the Deborah Colton Gallery focused on Russia, which included important exhibitions on both Olga Tobreluts and Oleg Dou. This emphasis encompasses a wider scope for the expansion of the diversities of international artists and concerns. In addition to the Gallery's stable of artists, Deborah Colton Gallery provides consultative services both nationally and internationally to individuals, corporations and institutions so they can start to acquire specific works through a comprehensive program of collecting. Exhibitions highlight only the most provocative and relevant contemporary artists, whose diverse practices include paintings, works on paper, sculpture, video, photography, performance, conceptual future media and public space installations.

If you are near Williamsburg, Virginia please take note of this outstanding Jonas Mekas exhibit and film screening! This project follows the Jonas Mekas Film Festival and exhibition that we organized in Asbury Park, New Jersey last summer! A special thanks to Lee Matney for his dedication to this project in the Williamsburg area.

The Andrews Gallery at the College of William & Mary presents “Still Beautiful in My Memory”, an exhibition of works by pioneering avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas (1922–2019). Organized in collaboration with The Jonas Mekas Estate, Deborah Colton Gallery, OUTPOST NYC DCG, and Lee Matney Gallery, the exhibition brings together Mekas’s rarely exhibited framed still images – known as the “Frozen Frames” – with a continuous screening of his final major film. Together, these works explore fragmentation, memory, displacement, and the poetic construction of a life through cinema.

Exciting News!

A pioneering figure in American avant-garde cinema, Jonas Mekas co-founded FILM CULTURE Magazine with his brother in 1954 and became a film columnist for THE VILLAGE VOICE in 1958. In the early 1960’s he founded the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and the Film-Makers’ Cinematheque, which evolved into Anthology Film Archives, one of the world’s largest repositories of avant-garde film. Jonas Mekas published over thirty books of prose and poetry and taught at institutions such as the New School, Cooper Union, NYU, and MIT. His work has influenced generations of filmmakers and artists, such as Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, and Chantal Ackerman. His films and art installations have been exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, Tate Museum, Serpentine Gallery, Whitney Museum, MoMA and Centre Pompidou.

Jonas Mekas captured moments that we all cherish in art history, in American history, in life…. from filmmakers, Salvador Dali, the Kennedys, Warhol, Yoko Ono and John Lennon, Elvis Presley, the World Trade Center…to the more personal special moments of nature, his family, being humans and celebrating life, cherishing life to its fullest

If you don’t see our sign outside the front door now, it’s because the 2445 North Boulevard Exhibition space is closed now as we focus our time and efforts on promoting our artists on the east coast and nationally. I’m working from our Bay Head, New Jersey studio, but we still have staff working in Houston supporting our projects in Houston and nationwide. We are still operating full time as we successfully continue to create private and museum acqusitions and exhibitions for our artists throughout the country.
