BOX 13 ArtSpace is an artist run nonprofit innovative environment for the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art in Houston. BOX 13 creates this environment through the offering of affordable workspaces for emerging and established artists and the dedication of a significant portion of its building for exhibitions. Our building hosts approximately 20 artists' studios, plus three

gallery spaces, two window galleries, a stairwell and an exterior courtyard. Our resident directed gallery spaces support over a dozen experimental, innovative and fresh exhibitions a year. Box 13 is dedicated to showing work which is not capable of being shown in commercial galleries.

Do You Have Papers? | Madelline Vicencio
Upstairs BOX gallery

"Do You Have Papers?" laments those loved and overlooked by systems that fail to value them as people through tactile practices such as collecting and mixed-media craft. The title recalls a dehumanizing question that reduces a person's worth to their citizenship status. Driven by a scarcity mindset and concern for those at risk of deportation, the work deconstructs accumulative notes, documents, household items, used clothing, and sentimental keepsakes, repurposing them into materially rich collages and sculptures. This exhibition invites viewers to confront the detritus that makes up human existence. It seeks to memorialize the home and the immigrant experience through mechanisms akin to "immigrant clutter," a habit of hoarding while preserving collective history. Like those who surround themselves with the remembrances of their homeland and those who use what they have at hand to minimize waste, this archive is a container of devotion and evidence of resilience.

Transformation Cycle | Dario Salvatore Bucheli
Window BOX Gallery

“Transformation Cycle” narrates the mythic journey of the snake: She encounters the moon pierced by a blade and recognizes that transformation requires sacrifice. She then descends underground, entering a liminal space where she sheds her skin and releases what she can no longer carry forward. Finally, she emerges from the earth, reborn into a new form. The cycle continues, an ongoing passage of change, surrender, and renewal.

Dario Salvatore Bucheli is an artist and museum professional based in Beaumont, Texas. Bucheli holds a BA from the University of Dallas and an MFA from Texas Christian University, both in Studio Art with a focus on painting. Exhibition history includes presentations throughout Texas and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Bucheli’s work is represented by Fort Works Art.

Bucheli explores themes of displacement, identity, and connection through reinterpretations of symbols from pre-colonial Mesoamerican codices alongside references to contemporary American politics and culture. This approach reflects an ongoing effort to situate the present moment within the broader context of American history.

“Queerness is primarily about futurity and hope. That is to say that q***rness is always in the horizon.”

-José Esteban Muñoz

Where does the energy of a party go after it's over? How can spaces of connection, especially q***r dance parties, gay bars, karaoke, and the environments they create enable us to imagine the future? In this exhibition, I explore the significance of club and living room dance floors alike and what it feels like to look back and savor sweet moments. In my most utopian dreams, a q***r dance party embodies everything that is craved and missing from the day-to-day, carving space for a world that is accepting and beyond its current constraints. I make layered drawings, photographs, and prints to explore the multiple outcomes possible in both the physical process of making repeated imagery and the disciplined hopefulness necessary for a better future. In a world that is unsafe for q***r people and multitudes of identities, I'd like to think another world is possible. Through my work, I imagine places like a dance floor or a karaoke bar as ways to dream up what we wish

Scaff(Holding) | Jordan Vinyard
Front BOX gallery

Technology dislocates. It pops the seams and streamline fixtures of our lives, demanding constant recalibration. As we evolve alongside our machines, we redefine the governance of our bodies, actions, and experiences. Scaff(Holding) interrogates the architectures that sustain labor hierarchies in an era increasingly mediated by intelligent machines.

Scaff, the “scum or refuse” depicts the overworked bodies and devalued processes that remain necessary.

The work asks: who becomes the support system? And more critically, what does it mean when machines begin to decide who—or what—occupies this position?

As automation and artificial intelligence reshape the labor landscape, hierarchies emerge. Formed by access, optimization, and control, these systems do not eliminate “dirty work” They displace and obscure it, redistributing its weight onto those recast as infrastructural—human or otherwise.

Through installation, kinetic sculpture, and performance, Scaff(Holding) stages an absurd choreography of support, burden, and neglect. Outfitted with autonomous car parts, stones, and embedded video, the space operates as both workplace and theatre. Machines enact ritualized gestures of maintenance, order, and futility. Repetition becomes a metric of worth; endurance, and search for belonging.
