Charles Mills is a living legacy. At 105 years old, he has a lifetime of experiences to share with us.

While others fought on the front lines, Charles and his fellow Merchant Marines delivered the cargo, fuel, and supplies that kept our armed forces alive and fighting. No cargo, no victory. It's that simple.

We are proud to introduce him as the inaugural profile in HMCM's Living History series—because some history is archived, and some comes through your door. Charles Mills is the latter. A WWII Merchant Marine veteran. A Congressional Gold Medal recipient. A living witness whose story reminds us exactly why places like the HMCM were built.

Houston has always been a city that answers the call.

Today we honor the sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen from our community — and across this country — who gave their lives in service to something greater than themselves.

From our city to every sea they sailed: we remember. 🇺🇸 ⚓️

"America's strength has always been tied to its waters."

This morning, HMCM President Sara Howell delivered remarks at Port Houston in honor of National Maritime Day — and those words hit a little harder when you're standing at the edge of the Houston Ship Channel.

To the mariners, merchant sailors, military personnel, and waterfront communities who've shaped this nation — this one's for you. Your service matters, your legacy endures, and we will keep telling your stories. 🛳️⚓

The Houston Maritime Center & Museum is proud to be a space where conversations like this happen. 🛳️

Our Moms in Maritime lecture brought forward the voices of women who are actively moving this industry, and Taylor Dickerson, VP of Kirby Inland Marine LP and Executive President of WIMOs National, did not disappoint. More events like this are coming. Stay tuned!

8,000 years of humans figuring out how to float — and Houston has a museum dedicated to the ships that came after. ⛵ Come see all of our model ships at HMCM, each one built to scale, each one tied to a real vessel that sailed real waters. Guess how many we have in the comments! 👇

Nobody talks about the supply chain until there isn't one. 👀

The U.S. exported $2.43 billion in rice last year — and a huge chunk of it moved right through Port Houston. Swipe to see what it takes to get rice from a Texas Gulf Coast field to tables in Lagos, Lima, Lisbon, or your own kitchen. Then come experience the full story at the Houston Maritime Center & Museum.
