About Hugo

Hugo Pérez is a visual artist working in various mediums. His practice involves the use of painting, collage, sculpture, and digital tools to explore contemporary social issues that relate to identity, gender, and visibility. He is a member of Qollective, an artist-run collective which has exhibited throughout Houston and utilized performance and installation to create meaningful engagement and dialogue.

Originally from San Francisco, he has called Houston his home for more than several years. A graduate of the Art Institute, he received a BFA in graphic design in 2010. He maintains a design practice, Studio Hugo, that focuses on branding and public art. In 2016 he was awarded Escapist of the Year though the John Ross Palmer residency. He was named Favorite Local Artist in OutSmart Magazine two years in a row (2018/2019.) He sits on the board of directors for Pride Portraits, a non-profit organization. He painted the backdrop for the campaign, which has been photographed with over 6,000 members of the LGBT community, including notable figures in politics, sports, and entertainment.

Public works include artwork featured in Latino Art Now’s billboard campaign, 2020, Discovery Green Park's House of Cards installation, 2020, and BeVisible HTX, Houston’s largest pride wall, 2018. His work is in private collections in the U.S and internationally.
