Monday at the Museum we are sharing a group portrait inside the Presbyterian Church at 828 3rd St (currently the Beth Immanuel Messianic Synagogue). Taken about 1900. the names written on the back of the photo, from left to right: Frank Warner, Jean Penfield, Mrs. B. J. Price, Susie Keeley, Lila King (organist), Mrs. F. J. Carr, Mrs. Elwell, Mrs. Burnley, Mr. James M. Oliver; Minister: Mr. Charles Burnley.

Charles Burnley (1846-1911) was born in England and became the Minister of the Presbyterian Church in 1888 until his passing in 1911.

Monday at the Museum

We have bridge construction on our mind, as we think about navigating to and from Minnesota via the interstate bridge. So today we thought we would share a photo of the St. Croix River from Birkmose Park taken some time after 1971. You can see the Interstate bridge in the background. The eastbound lane was finished in 1951, and the westbound lane was completed in 1971. In this photo you can see both lanes.

It's hard to tell whether there is construction taking place on the right side of the photo, but it certainly seems fitting given the roadwork we see today! Like many travelers, we're looking forward to the day when the drive between Hudson and I-494 can be made without encountering construction along the way. Until then, we'll enjoy looking back at how this important river crossing has changed over the years.

Don't forget! This Saturday the Octagon House Museum is hosting the incredible St. Croix Valley Master Gardener's Plant Sale!

Monday at the Museum -- STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES!!! 💛💛💛

Not only does the Octagon House Museum preserve artifacts like books, letters, photos, and all sorts of other things--but we also have LIVING artifacts like these GORGEOUS yellow roses, nurtured by our team of volunteer gardeners and our Master Gardener partners.

We estimate these roses are at least 70 years old, planted sometime before 1957 by John and Margaret Hughes, who were both passionate and skilled gardeners. Margaret, in particular, was well known in Hudson for her skill at designing flower arrangements from her own garden.

Question for the gardeners out there! Do YOU know what kind of roses these are??? They are a hardy and vivacious type of rose, we have hundreds of blooms on the bush this year! Comment with your best guess/knowledge and we'll let you know if you're correct! 🌞

Come see these lovely blooms next Saturday when the museum will be open, AND the Master Gardeners will be having their annual plant sale! See you then!
