NEXT WEEKEND: HISTORY TAKES FLIGHT! - Info and Tix at: https://ahmus.me/aviation2026

Join us Saturday and Sunday, September 12-13, for Historic Aviation Weekend, two full days celebrating the people, aircraft, and stories that shaped aviation history.

This year’s event will feature a very special appearance by Maj. Heather “Lucky” Penney, USAF (Ret.), one of two F-16 pilots from the DC Air National Guard launched on September 11, 2001 to intercept United Flight 93.

With their F-16s not yet armed, Penney and her commanding officer took off knowing they might have only one way to stop the hijacked aircraft from reaching Washington, D.C. They were prepared to ram Flight 93 in what could have become a one-way mission.

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Maj. Penney will share her remarkable firsthand story and reflect on the service, sacrifice, and heroism of those who answered the call that day.

PLUS, experience historic aircraft in action with daily presentations and flying demonstrations featuring aircraft including the PT-17 Stearman, Stinson L-5/OY-1 Sentinel, German Fieseler Fi-156 Storch, AT-6 Texan, and, for the first time, our WWII U.S. Coast Guard Grumman JRF-5 Goose flying boat. Flying demonstrations are weather permitting.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12-13

THIS THURSDAY: THE BATTLE THAT CHANGED NAVAL WARFARE - https://www.americanheritagemuseum.org/event/history-after-hours-first-battle-of-the-ironclads-uss-monitor-versus-css-virginia-with-michael-manning/

On March 9, 1862, two radically different warships met at Hampton Roads, Virginia. When USS Monitor faced CSS Virginia, their historic clash became the first battle between ironclad warships and helped signal the end of the age of wooden fighting ships.

Join us this Thursday evening, September 3, at the American Heritage Museum for History After Hours: First Battle of the Ironclads, featuring Senior Docent and historian Michael Manning.

Through historic images, maps, and firsthand accounts, Manning will explore the remarkable transformation of USS Merrimack into the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia, the revolutionary design of USS Monitor, the dramatic Battle of Hampton Roads, and the technological revolution in naval warfare that followed.

Twenty years ago today, Marine Sgt. George M. Ulloa Jr. was killed in action while commanding an M1A1 Abrams near Habbaniyah, Iraq on August 3, 2006.

The training and leadership he provided helped the other members of his crew escape the danger area and survive. Today, their battle-damaged Abrams and the story of their final mission are preserved in the American Heritage Museum’s War on Terror Gallery.

Please read Sgt. Ulloa’s story and join us in honoring his service, courage, and sacrifice on this solemn anniversary: https://ahmus.me/ulloa
