October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and today we are honoring the incredible poet, scholar, and fierce survivor Alicia Ostriker, whose powerful words continue to resonate deeply within our community.
As a deeply cherished friend of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, Alicia’s voice mirrors Whitman’s own—raw, honest, celebrating the body, and refusing to stay silent in the face of suffering. Through her seminal work, The Crack in Walnut, and poems like "The Breast," she broke barriers by writing openly about mastectomy, healing, and the emotional complexities of breast cancer, giving a lifeline of language to countless others.

Join us at the Walt Whitman Birthplace for an interactive workshop: Smash Words/Cento Poetry With Peter Dugan!
A Cento poem is crafted entirely from lines borrowed from other poems. In this workshop, we will "smash" things up—rearranging, juxtaposing, and re-contextualizing those lines to discover unexpected, fresh, and brilliant new perspectives.
Leading the session is none other than Peter Dugan, the 2026 Long Island Poet of the Year and former Nassau County Poetry Laureate (2017–2019). Bring your love for words, and leave with a masterpiece born from collective inspiration!

Celebrating culture, history, and community! ✨
We had an incredible time hosting our Indigenous Peoples’ Day Event at the Walt Whitman Birthplace.
A huge thank you to Mandy Miller-Jackson of the Montaukett Nation, who shared powerful stories, history, and traditions with the children. Her words truly inspired the next generation to connect deeply with the rich history of the land we stand on. 🪵✨
Following the talk, the kids tapped into their own creativity by crafting beautiful dreamcatchers to take home. 🎨🌾
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special afternoon of learning, art, and remembrance.

Dermot Kearney traveled all the way from Warwick, UK, to visit the Birthplace where the Good Gray Poet was born. We love connecting with Whitman enthusiasts from around the world.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! 🍁✨

Join us today at 2:00 PM at the Walt Whitman Birthplace for a very special celebration tailored for kids in grades K–5.

We will be gathering today to honor the history and traditions of Indigenous cultures.

• Listen to an inspiring story read by Mandy Miller Jackson of the Montaukett Indian Nation.

• Learn about the history and cultural significance of dreamcatchers —and create your own dreamcatcher-inspired craft to take home!

This event is free to attend, making it a perfect afternoon activity .
