Due to the retirement of our current director, the Huntington Woods Library is seeking an experienced
administrator with a proven record of financial management, community involvement and general
management skills. The successful candidate will be out-going, tech savvy and a strong advocate for
libraries. Huntington Woods Public Library has a service area population of just fewer than 10,000.
Huntington Woods is approximately 3 miles north of Detroit and offers a small town living with easy
access to shopping, cultural activities, sports, and recreation. It lies on the Woodward corridor and City
boundaries include most of the Detroit Zoon and the Rackham Golf Course.
The library is a city department with a dedicated annual budget for 2021-2022 of $608,930. The director
reports directly to the City Manager and the library staff consists of one full time and twelve part time
employees. The director works closely with the Library Advisory board of seven residents including two
from Pleasant Ridge. The library is classified as a Class III library but operates as a Class IV library. The
library is one of the seventy-four member TLN Consortium, using the CARL software system. The library
is a focal point for the community which offers a wide variety of programming for adults and children. As
a community center the library hosts the Woods Gallery which highlights local artists along with artist
receptions. The facility includes multiple study areas, several meeting rooms, and a fully functional
kitchen. The library is also supported by an active Friends group.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited program.
• State of Michigan professional Level 2 Certification.
• A minimum of five years library experience, with at least three years in an administrative or
managerial capacity in a library setting.
• Thorough knowledge of the principals, practices, and procedures of professional library
administration.
• Thorough knowledge of library collection classification and selection techniques.
• Strong knowledge of the public’s interests needs and expectations regarding the library.
• Ability to develop programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
• Ability to hire, train and supervise the work of professional library staff members, clerical
assistants, and maintenance workers.
• Ability to maintain records and prepare comprehensive reports on operation of the library,
programs offered, collection changes, funding options, and other related issues.

• Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively under stress and changes in work priorities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Manages and supervises library operations. Hires trains and evaluates library employees.
• Provides leadership and direction in the development of short and long-range library plans.
Gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports. and recommendations. Coordinates
and recommends changes to the library master plan.
• Provides advice and makes presentations regarding library issues to City administrators, boards,
commissions, community groups and the public.
• Oversees the selection, cataloging and general collection of books and other items contained in
the library. Reviews books, periodicals and collections which are outdated or not used, and
coordinates removal and disposition.
• Provides professional librarian services to the public. Performs inter-library loans and in-house
reference work as well as assisting patrons in use of library computers.
• Assurers that library facilities and equipment are properly maintained. Coordinates maintenance
and repairs when necessary.
• Coordinates the library program with other City departments and community organizations to
ensure the needs of the community are being met.
• Provides administrative support to the Library Board. Prepares agenda items and maintains
record of meetings.
• Initiates and negotiates contracts, applies for and administers grants, and manages the bidding
process.
• Responds to public inquiries regarding library services, cultural programs, technology advances
and other related issues.
• Performs related work as required.
COMPENSATION:
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications: $62,000 - $70,000. Benefits include health
insurance, dental and optical insurance, life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, MERS
defined contribution retirement plan, and paid time off including vacation, sick, personal leave, holiday
leave, and floating holidays.
