I received this picture today in the mail from Alva McKnight's daughter Michelle. What a treasure. She writes that her father Alva McKnight worked for Ray Gardner in his grocery store here in Huntington as a meat cutter. The picture was taken for the 49'er dance where she said that the men would grow beards and the women would make period costume dresses. In this picture we have Ray Gardner, Alva McKnight and Orie Baker. The 49'er dance was held in the spring and sponsored by the VFW. People would bring their kids to the dance, and I remember seeing the guys sneaking alcohol out of the back of their vehicles.

Our caboose on Main Street here in Huntington is nearly complete thanks to the endless hours of Mayor Chuck with some help from his son Sam. I was able in 2020 to get a grant from the Union Pacific Foundation to repaint and put on new lettering and then COVID struck. After COVID our prospective painters disappeared. At the end of 2025 the grant was to return to the Union Pacific Foundation. Chuck stepped up to the plate and totally volunteered to take on this project. The number of hours he has spent on this project is immense and he deserves praise. The Huntington Historical Society and the Huntington Lion's Club thank you Chuck Guerri and your family!

The caboose is now bright and shiny and enhances the already beautiful Lion's Park that Mike Raney and Eric Pinkston keep in such pristine condition.

Block 4 from the Sanborn Fire Maps 1930. This was the main business block in Huntington for years. The Pacific Hotel was the original RR Depot. It was cut into two sections and moved from the railroad yard to the location shown in this map.

On 24 Nov 1959 a disgruntled employee tried to burn down Howell's Cafe. On another note in October 1960 Mabel Walker took over management of the restaurant. Mabel was the great grandmother of Michael Wiley. She was in the process of buying the place when she was hit by a drunk driver and severely hurt October 1963. Then in May 2019 sixty years later an arsonist succeeded in burning the historic building down. www.newspapers.com
