Listed under historic building inventories in Huntsville, Texas. The George Washington Rogers House was the home of George Washington Rogers, who was instrumental in making Huntsville, Texas the educational, political, and cultural center of the State of Texas before the Civil War. The home was donated to The Ethician Foundation in 2015 to serve as a museum dedicated to the early history of Texas

and Sam Houston's move to Huntsville on behalf of Margaret Lea Houston. Sam Houston and George Washington Rogers were both land barons and developers. Both wanted the Capitol of the State of Texas to be located on Rogers 250 acres in Huntsville that was adjacent to Houston's initial 86.5 acres in Huntsville. That idea never came to pass so Rogers donated 5 acres to Austin College on what old timers called "Capitol Hill" well into the 20th Century. Huntsville was known as The Athens of Texas and The Mount Vernon of Texas due to its many hills dotted with gracious homes before the Civil War. Many of the historic homes remained into the 1950s when city fathers decided that they represented the past and were in the way of development. George Washington Rogers' father was instrumental in the establishment of the part of Huntsville known as "Rogersville,"
where freed slaves built their homes and businesses after the Civil War.
