Every once in a while, I have to send a painting out to a show in order to keep my commitments or to meet a deadline that I’d rather not send out. Keeper of the Flames is one of those- if I didn’t have the commitment and this deadline- I’d keep this oil painting to hang in my own house.

Keeper of the Flame features my niece, Layla as the model. She sits amongst the desert foliage using objects she found in nature to start a fire. A small but steady stream of smoke begins to appear as she skillfully kindles the flame.

I love the composition and the colors. The way the large agave in the background frames her and the complimentary juxtaposition of the greens and vibrant reds.

You never know what will happen when working with animals. Luckily no one got bucked off the horse- this time 😬 Big shout out to our awesome horse wrangler, my family, and of course my awesome model. It takes a village.
