Marcia Bauerle Art

Marcia Bauerle Art Collage artist. Mother. Teacher. Life is unpredictable. So is the art I create. The story of my painting is more about process than anything.

I might start by selecting a palette of previously painted tissue papers and serendipitous scraps. The composition is deliberately formed, often using the rule of thirds, but I strive for overall balance and rhythm to make shapes and colors flow throughout. Every work so far has had a significant evolution. Many works grow from old paintings--as the entire background of a new painting, or reborn a

s small pieces of a new work using the texture and history of another time. You can see hints of my background in folk art, a Midwestern family's passion for flight, piano music playing too loud, too fast, and too late. You may sense influences from the many miles and hours spent with children and all their activities. You might even see frustrations and joys as I make my way in the world. The first steps inform the outcome, but there is forgiveness, and myriad ways of getting there. View my blog at http://www.marciabauerleart.blogspot.com/

Marcia Bauerle Art's "Roads to Freedom," a mixed media collage on 20" x 20" cradled board, is one of the pieces that will be shown as part of the Collage Nebraska exhibit in May at Hot Shops Art Center. Please join us for the opening reception 6-8pm, Saturday, May 4.

Marcia shared these ideas about making the piece: "Randomly playing with collage papers, stencils, and washi tape had this piece in total chaos," she said. "There is a point where you have to stop and analyze the composition, which often leads to painting out some of the precious parts for the good of the whole. That's what happened here, but it still had no meaning and I searched for words about sunflowers to make it come together. I finally googled "sunflowers in My Antonia," and found this great line about sunflowers on the roads to freedom. I've used pages from an old copy of Willa Cather's book in several other paintings and was easily able to find the quote that made my painting feel finished."
