The ‘Peace for Everyone’ room at the Peace Pavilion encourages the understanding of everyone’s basic needs to survive and thrive. So today, we celebrate global cultures and the importance of education and dialogue to achieve sustainable peace on this, the World Day for Cultural Diversity, observed annually by the UN on May 21.

We encourage you to celebrate by watching an international film, cooking a dish from a different culture, volunteering with an inclusive organization, or visiting a museum that highlights different cultures.

Introducing – the Peace for Me Room!

Want to get a peek into the Peace Pavilion? Here’s the first of five videos introducing each of the four exhibit rooms and the Toddler Room. The “Peace for Me” room promotes social-emotional learning, self-care, and peaceful choices. Thanks to our docents Katie and Amy, who voiced the puppets, Sam and Lily, respectively, and to Alex Zahner, an aspiring filmmaker, who created the videos.

The Peace Pavilion supports the well-being of children and families and recognizes the importance of family-oriented policies in impacting children’s futures. Today, we celebrate the UN’s “International Day of Families” with the theme of “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing. " It will spotlight global disparities in essential services that help children thrive, foster dialogue, and shine a light on effective policies and solutions for sustainable development.

For more information about this event, see https://social.desa.un.org/issues/family/international-day-of-families-15-may or follow the live stream on UN WebTV.

Celebrate this Mexican holiday and learn more about the culture by visiting the New Mexico pueblo home in the “Peace for Everyone” room. Visitors can use storytelling dolls to create stories, pretend to bake bread in the “hornos” – a community oven used in indigenous villages, and pretend to pump water to carry back to their village.

Much like the ‘force’ in the movie Star Wars, peace represents a state of harmony, balance, and selfless connection between all living things, and is a powerful, proactive force for good. So for all Star Wars fans, here’s a little inspiration and wisdom from some of the characters in the series.

• Your focus determines your reality. – Qui-Gon Jinn
• The force is neither light nor dark, master nor slave, but a balance between extremes. – Lanoree Brock
• To be Jedi is to face the truth, and choose. Give off light, or darkness, Padawan. Be a candle, or the night. – Yoda
