Art for the Homeschooled

Art for the Homeschooled Indianapolis Art Center class designed for the variety of creative needs for Homeschooled families. The class is divided into 4 week sessions.

Thursdays, 1:30-3:30pm
4 Week Sessions

This art class uses a variety of media to teach concepts of composition, balance, rhythm, movement, color, and values . Creative thinking is the goal by focusing on individual challenges and team projects. Drawing (graphite, pen & ink, pastels), painting (acrylic, watercolor, tempra), collage, Photoshop, digital photography, and video are some of the media a

vailable for exploring creativity. Students can enroll for the duration appropriate to their budget and availability. Experiences and learning opportunities expand for students who continue through multiple sessions.

6-8 year old students will playfully create with a variety of media. Parental involvement is urged for this age group. This is an opportunity for a caregiver to participate and learn how to provide creative time. 9-12 year olds start with drawing. Basic shapes are used to define the underlying form of real objects. Controlling values while working with charcoal and graphite is an important step before exploring the complexities of color. Teens are introduced to compositional elements through drawing, painting, and photography. Opportunities to adventure into realms of self-expression are encouraged. The primary instructor is Dan Cooper, a lifelong professional visual artist with 5 years of experience at the Art Center. You can learn more about his classes by going to http://CooperFineArt.com where he has photos, video, and narrative descriptions. Cooper is available for questions and comments at [email protected] and 317.845.7365. To register contact the Indianapolis Art Center at 317.255.2464 or go online at http://IndplsArtCenter.org. Our 6th week class went 3D! Everyone created their own clay sculptures. It was fun seeing the sculpting tools being so skillfully used. I don't think I even needed to demonstrate at the beginning of class. They were all ready to get busy. - Dan Cooper

Still life projects were our 5th week class challenge. After examples and a discussion about lighting, we discovered how a composition could change dramatically based on viewing angle. Everyone got to choose a medium and explore styles among realism and abstraction. - Dan Cooper

The morning was so beautiful at the Indianapolis Art Center we decided to spend our time with photography. After discussing what composition means and how to look for balance, rhythm, and movement, we used the IAC cameras to find centers of interest and uses negative space. - Dan Cooper

Today's class started with scribble drawings in our sketch books. We then started right into color theory, learning about Jackson Pollock's hidden signature in his "Mural". After seeing other abstract expressionism examples, each student made their own color palettes using just the primary colors, black, and white to paint their own style. While paintings dried in the hot sun we spent the last few minutes doing more drawings. - Dan Cooper
