Thank you to the Anderson Children's Foundation for providing financial support to children’s programs at Coachella Valley History Museum. Each year, approximately 550 children participate in EXPLORE Junior Historians, a unique after-school program that teaches local kids the history and present day workings of the place they’re growing up in - the Coachella Valley - as well as public speaking and leadership skills through fun activities, guest speakers, and seasonal projects. Past sessions have included a Living History Festival where kids dress up as local historical figures and teach parents about who they are as their families tour the museum; a field trip to Indio City Hall with the Mayor and City Manager; and a Fast Pitch Contest where kids pitched their ideas for new local businesses to a guest panel.

Registration is currently open for the next session, which starts September 15, 2026. To learn more, visit cvhm.org/junior-historians.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night’s Flower Arrangement Workshop, led by Nicole Trigg of Botanical Verbiage, at Coachella Valley History Museum.

Nicole shares unique pieces of local history related to the foliage she chooses for each workshop’s floral arrangement. For last night’s workshop, she received a contribution of palm fronds from Aziz Farms because September is the month dedicated to bringing global awareness to dates (the fruit), and World Dates Day is celebrated annually on September 22. The date industry has a huge economic impact on our area since the Coachella Valley produces over 90% of all date fruit grown in the United States! September marks the peak of the date harvest season, and the initiative honors the hard work of date farmers and recognizes the crucial role dates play in desert agriculture and traditions, such as breaking the fast during Ramadan.

The country’s only Date Museum is on our campus. Celebrate dates this month with a visit to CVHM to learn more. Hours can be found at CVHM.org.

Coachella Valley History Museum exists because of volunteers!

From its infancy, the Coachella Valley Historical Society (dba Coachella Valley History Museum) has always been powered by the energy and passion of its volunteers. In 1965, a group of valley residents began collecting historical items and archival information and officially incorporated. They worked with The City of Indio - Government to purchase the Smiley-Tyler House (which is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary this year!) and in 1983 signed a lease with the City to operate the Smiley house as a museum. During a six-month period, local area residents and Society members volunteered the labor to renovate the outdoor gardens, garages, and buildings as well as the Smiley-Tyler adobe in preparation for the opening, which happened on October 19, 1984. The Young At Art summer program for children was established at the same time. Who did all of this? VOLUNTEERS. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

⏩ Fast forward to today, and it’s still the dedication of volunteers that fuels museum operations, programs, and events. We love our volunteers! 🫶🏼

And there’s plenty of room to welcome more volunteers, whether they’re 18 or 80, with a role for everyone that takes into account what they enjoy doing and how much time they want to commit, from giving museum tours to checking in guests in the gift shop for those who enjoy interacting with the public, from gardening to cleaning exhibits for those who prefer staying behind-the-scenes, and helping with annual fundraisers for those who enjoy parties and event planning.
