The Stanley Museum of Art at the University of Iowa collaborates with Feed Me Weird Things to pair music with painting!
Very cool - take a look!
Music and visual art often reflect similar aesthetic impulses. That's why we have teamed up with Feed Me Weird Things to pair works from our collections with music presented in the listening series. Read on to learn more about the shared spatial affinities of an Op Art pioneer and an experimental composer.
An early leader of the Op Art movement, painter Edna Andrade explored transcendental repetition and symmetry. Characterized by pulsating patterns, Andrade’s discombobulating geometries formed from striking color combinations produce stark often linear designs. Her intricate, mathematically determined compositions challenge viewers to imagine new visual logics in the same way that Christine Burke Ensemble's balanced yet asymmetric musical creations dare listeners to predict the next sonic surprise. Like Andrade’s minimalist paintings, Burke’s compositions embrace space and uncertainty of scale. Listen live tonight Trumpet Blossom Cafe - event details in the comments.
