On June 5th during Ithaca’s First Friday Gallery Night starting at 5 p.m., Handwork will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a ribbon cutting event. The Mayor of Ithaca, Robert G. Cantelmo, will be in attendance along with other invited speakers who will share a few words before the ribbon is cut. Following the ceremony, the first 50 people through the doors will receive a gift bag featuring handmade work by Handwork’s artist members. Refreshments, including cake and drinks, will be available for attendees. The celebration will continue throughout the weekend with a 20% off storewide sale on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, along with a free gift with purchase while supplies last.
Founded in 1976, Handwork has been a longstanding part of Ithaca’s creative community. What began as a collective of twelve artists sharing the responsibility of running a storefront has grown into a cooperative representing more than 25 makers. Today, the shop offers a wide range of handcrafted goods, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, dried florals, glass, woodworking, and fine art. Most of the work is created by its members, with additional pieces from regional and national makers who align with the co-op’s mission.
