Diaspora Gallery Welcome to Diaspora! Visit our website: http://diasporagallery.com/ Owner's Background:

I have loved art for most of my life.

In the 8th grade I was introduced to the art of Romare Bearden. That started my keen interest in the artists of the Harlem Renaissance. I began to collect art in high school. While in college I began to develop an interest in African textiles. That was also the beginning of my interest in selling items from the African Diaspora. With friends, I would sell fabric, jewelry, clothing and other small

handcrafted items in the lounge of my dorm. Since then my quest for authentic products created by artisans throughout the African Diaspora, has taken me from the Ethiopian highlands, to the carver's provinces in Ghana; and from art shows in Atlanta to trade shows in New York City. Over the last 25 years I have amassed quite a collection, and now I enjoy sharing what I've learned through our store, Diaspora Gallery, located in Ithaca, New York. About Diaspora:

Diaspora Gallery is an Afrocentric gift shop located on The Commons in Ithaca, New York. We are dedicated to sharing and exposing people to a variety of items from throughout the African Diaspora. We carry framed art, masks, fabric, natural and organic body care products, instruments, clothing, home furnishings and many other items created and used by the people of the African Diaspora.

"Rosalynn and I are deeply saddened by the death of Nelson Mandela. The people of South Africa and human rights advocates around the world have lost a great leader. His passion for freedom and justice created new hope for generations of oppressed people worldwide, and because of him, South Africa is today one of the world's leading democracies." - President Jimmy Carter

Yelp! Review

Thought it was cool, funny, and pretty accurate...."This is a really cool African-themed store, featuring artwork, statuary, clothing, jewelry, incense and other products mainly from African, African-American and Afro-American sources. It's larger than your average ethnic-themed shop and was very well taken care of. They carry a very nice selection of natural and organic liquid and bar soaps, lotions, etc that are quite reasonably priced and often on sale (by two get one, etc). I tried a few of their Nubian brand soap bars and they smelled and felt amazing. The guy working there (possibly an owner? He had AWESOME long dreads) was super friendly & very helpful"

Just in - Two new Fang Masks from Gabon. History; The Fang people used masks in their secret societies. Members of this male society wore the Ngil masks during the initiation of new members and the persecution of wrongdoers. Masqueraders, clad in raffia costumes and attended by helpers, would materialize in the village after dark, illuminated by flickering torchlight.

The Fang tribe are spread over a vast area along the Atlantic coast line of equatorial Africa and can be found in Cameroon equatorial Guinea and Gabon namely along the bank of the Ogowe river.
