🎉 Volunteer Spotlight: Triston Watkins

Triston is a student athlete at Madison Central High School. After graduation, he plans to attend the University of South Alabama in 2027, where he hopes to play football and study marine biology with a minor in environmental science.

Passionate about science, conservation, and environmental stewardship, Triston brings a strong work ethic and dedication to his volunteer work at the museum. We are grateful to have him as part of our volunteer team and look forward to seeing all he accomplishes in the future.

Summer Teacher Workshop | June 26, 2026

Join us for Project WILD: WILD Learning for WILD Minds, a hands-on professional development workshop that explores how nature-based learning can boost student engagement, comprehension, and retention. Participants will earn 0.5 CEU credits while discovering practical activities and strategies that can be used across subject areas.

Teachers may bring up to two children in grades 1–6 to enjoy a day of guided nature exploration, games, and interactive learning activities at the museum while you participate in the workshop.

📸 It’s Monday, show us something you’ve seen in nature. 📸

Featuring two Gray Ratsnakes captured by Stephenee Shamburger.

These snakes appear to be engaged in a combat dance, a behavior in which male snakes wrestle and attempt to overpower one another during the breeding season. While this behavior may look aggressive, it rarely results in serious injury.

Gray Ratsnakes are nonvenomous snakes native to Mississippi and are excellent climbers, often found in forests, fields, and even around barns and buildings. They help keep rodent populations in check and play an important role in the ecosystem.

Snake Day was a great day at the museum! 🐍

Curious minds of all ages got up close with live snakes, met our incredible herpetologists, and discovered why these often misunderstood reptiles are such an important part of Mississippi's ecosystems. It was great to see so many visitors exploring and learning about Mississippi's native snakes throughout the day.

A moth with no mouth?

The Polyphemus moth, named after the one-eyed Cyclops Polyphemus from Greek mythology, is a cool find! Due to their nocturnal nature, excellent camouflage and short adult lifespan, they are seldom found. Adult Polyphemus moths have no mouthparts and do not feed, living only long enough to mate and reproduce.

Mississippi is home to 55 species of snakes, and only 6 of them are venomous.

Snakes play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by helping control populations of rodents and other small animals. Most snakes are harmless and would rather avoid encounters with people. If you see a snake, the best practice is to slowly take three steps back and walk away. Their colors, patterns, and behaviors are often adaptations that help them survive in the wild.

At Snake Day, you'll have the opportunity to meet 26 native Mississippi snake species.

Join us Friday, June 12, to see native Mississippi snakes up close, attend educational programs, and talk with museum staff and experts.
