Join us for “Discovery Day: Art History” beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6. This free family-friendly event will highlight the many forms of artistic expression found across Mississippi and how they shaped the state’s cultural story. This exciting day is specially designed for 4th – 8th grade students and their families at the Two Mississippi Museums.

There will be:
• A multimedia presentation
• Hands-on crafts
• A flash tour of the “Mississippi Made” exhibit.

Today we highlight the arrests of the first group of Freedom Riders in Jackson that happened on this day in 1961. Visit the Mississippi Department of Archives & History YouTube page to watch a past which spotlights the book “Breach of Peace,” a photo-history told in images old and new. The book includes the mug shots of all 328 Freedom Riders arrested in Jackson, along with contemporary portraits of 98 Riders, supplemented by interviews and brief bios. The Mississippi Delta is known as the “birthplace of the blues” because of the roots the genre has in the area. Many famous blues musicians hail from Mississippi, and in the “Mississippi Made” exhibit at the Two Mississippi Museums, you can see some of the iconic outfits, vinyl records, and instruments of legends like B.B. King.

Join us for “Mississippi Made Gallery Talk: Innovation” at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, in the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Exhibition Hall at the Two Mississippi Museums. In connection with America250, this free event will highlight the role innovation has played in the state’s history. Nissan specialist Jake Garner will discuss the evolution of automobile manufacturing and the innovations the Canton Nissan plant has incorporated to meet the changing demands of the automobile industry.
