“Where did all that life go” by Bo Bartlett on display at MOCA. This piece immediately drew me in. Growing up fishing with my dad was an early introduction to killing for sport and food. A game of catch that was both exhilarating and heartbreaking, useful and senseless. My dad was a stalwart and patient guide in this exploration of life and death. Although a sense of reverence for life was often absent there was awe in what nature had for us. The act of fishing is a study in patience. An often silent and monk like stillness hung over us as we waited for a bite. In this painting, I can see and feel and smell everything that led to this moment. The beauty and gore and bitter sweet glory of the catch. What made this painting even more meaningful to me was the fact that Bo based this image on a fishing trip he went on as a child to the Jacksonville Beach Pier, a place my dad and I frequented. This is a testament to the power of art to stir something in us.
