Join us for the Opening Night this Saturday!!!

šŸ’›šŸ’›šŸ’›

Across place and time it has too often been spoken: ā€œKeep quiet. Be seen not heard. Whatever you have to say is not worth the space it takes up.ā€

ā€˜Silence Unraveled’ serves as an antidote, giving expression to the truth of trauma, the power of voice, and the importance of human connection.

This exhibition amplifies stories of inheritance: what we receive from the women who came before us, what we choose to keep, and what we finally set down. Paintings, prints, drawings, textiles, poems and songs stitch together experiences that are personal and political, tender and furious, vulnerable and resolute. It is a catharsis of truth-telling that is connected to history and very much of this moment.

The art works in this exhibition wrap around the words of Jacksonville playwright and performer Bobbie O’Connor, who recently premiered her one-woman performance entitled the same. It is a story that traces four generations of women in her family and the misogyny that shaped each of their lives across more than 150 years.

It is an honor to lift up this group of artists as they break through the silence, link arms across generations, and take up space that is rightly theirs. We see them in their individual fullness while also feeling the collective ties that bind us to one another.
And as always, there is room for your voice, too, as we co-create ways to resist, love, and heal, together. Visitors are invited to literally add words to the exhibition and participate in programs throughout the summer, including art workshops, story sharing events, artist talks, and more.

Participating Artists:
Maevis Blythe | Teresa Cook | Deja Gee | Kira Graham | Hope McMath | Marsha Glazier | Lauren Fincham | Marsha Hatcher | Erin Kendrick | Violet Lester | Ripley Selhorst | Priscilla Smith | Sharla Valeski | Bobbie O’Connor

Special gratitude to Barbara Colaciello, BABS’ LAB, and Bobbie O’Connor for bringing Silence Unraveled to life and inviting all of us to explore the ways we have been silenced and possibly, played a role in silencing others.

It was the perfect way to close out the ā€˜Duval Displaced, Duval Dis Place’ exhibition. Four artists leading a conversation about the history of displacement, the character of our local communities, the courage of artists in creating and documenting change, the role of whiteness in our collective efforts, and the importance of arts education.

Big love to the artists in the room and to all who did more than witness, but became a part of the exchange.

This is our sweet spot - intimate, intentional, inclusive, challenging, and inspiring. Thank you! šŸ’›šŸ™šŸ¼

On May 13, 1985 the city of Philadelphia bombed its own people. Police incinerated two blocks of Philly, murdering 11 people, including 5 children, as they went after members of MOVE, a Black liberation group. The injustice continued as the remains of two of the children killed were misused by Penn State and later Princeton. It is the ultimate example of displacement. And as we mark the final day of our current exhibition ā€˜Duval Displaced, Duval Dis Place’ we appreciate this work by .

Entitled ā€˜Indigo Witness’, which amplifies the mass racial terror violence and displacement in our State of Florida. From Overtown to Ocoee and from Rosewood to Pensacola and from Jacksonville to Perry - it’s a nasty history of state violence against Black bodies.

Artists speaking truth.

Additional photos from the MOVE bombing only 41 years ago.

The first peppers straight from our garden to the Community Cart! They were snagged by one of our neighbors before they even left my hands. He lives two blocks from us and regularly gives to and receives from this mutual aid space.

When I told him I had just harvested these from the veggie bed over his shoulder he laughed, loud and from deep in his belly. It was pure joy!

He then shared - with affection - that he had a bet with his dad that we’d never get anything to grow in this little corner of the world. The fact that he was getting the first fruits of our labor cracked him up. Whatever inspired our happy exchange, it is fuel for the work.

This is Yellow House.

If you know Yellow House, you also know Bobbie O'Connor as a writer, an activist, and a humanitarian. Her fingerprints are all over our work. So, we are excited to be a part of her newest written/performance piece - Silence Unraveled. A telling of a her story across the generations of women in her family, Bobbie explores themes that we can all relate to - how trauma transfers, what it means to hold secrets, the freedom that comes from speaking truth, and the many faces of healing.

There are only two performances this weekend at BABS' LAB, CoRK Arts District North. If the ticket price is a barrier, let us know and we will take care of you. We will see you there as we experience the kind of story sharing that many continue to try to silence.

And watch this space for more about the art exhibition Silence Unraveled that will open at Yellow House on May 30th.

World premiere. Four generations of women who were told to be quiet — and one who isn't anymore. Performed by Bobbie O'Connor. Directed by Barbara Colaciello.
