Art Presence Art Center Art Presence Art Center is a nonprofit collaborative fine art gallery and art education center in Ja Exhibits are on display for one to two months.

Art Presence Art Center is a collective gallery with artist members from throughout the Rogue Valley in southern Oregon. Art Presence hosts the popular annual show and sale of the Artists Workshop every August. We also present an exciting open show every October, an exhibition of artwork from an open call for our October Creative Challenge with a new theme each year, and "Holiday Treasures," a two month show of affordable art by our members for holiday gift giving each year. Art Presence Art Center regular gallery hours are 11am - 5pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Plans for Halloween?

Saturday, October 31st, 1pm to 2:30pm, we're partnering with Dos Mariposas for our Creative W**e Series.

Joins us in getting ready for Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) by decorating sugar skulls, or calaveras de azúcar.

These are vibrant, decorated skull shapes made from molded sugar. On this traditional Mexican holiday, they represent departed souls, celebrate life, and honor the memories of loved ones who have passed away.

You will be provided with a sugar-free (molded plastic) skull to paint and decorate with various adornments and embellishments, ideas, and instruction. All materials & instruction provided by Art Presence's Miranda Caroligne and Silvia Trujillo.

Feel free to bring your own broken jewelry, beads, silk flowers (less than 1" diameter recommended for eyes). Beginners are welcome for this fun holiday activity!

The class will be followed by Dos Mariposas annual Halloween party, with music starting at 3pm. Wear costumes if you've got them and stay to play into the evening!

Decorating for the holiday season often includes hunting for one or two (or five!) more special pieces to add to the collection.

This year, instead of shopping at Michael's or Home Goods, where everyone else goes, you can make something no one else will have in their home.

On Saturday, November 14th, Cynthia Griffin and Joann Cleckner from the Calligraphy Guild will teach us how to turn simple capital letters into stunning art.

But we only have enough room for 10 students!

Joins us from 1:30pm to 3:00pm for the Decorated Capitals class, where students will learn creative techniques to transform capitals into visually striking art that can be used as focal points for home decor, card making, or given as unique gifts.

Our Imaginarium exhibit continues with a caravan of crows, ravens, owls, and vintage Halloween vibes in Jacksonville!

“The Scream” by Edvard Munch has survived N**i’s and two thefts.

Munch actually created several versions, with the primary ones being 2 paintings and 2 pastels created between 1893 and 1910.

One pastel version was owned by Norwegian shipowner, Thomas Olsen. During WWII, in order to keep the art out of N**i hands, Olsen hid it in a hay barn in rural Norway.

The family later sold it at Sotheby’s New York in 2012 for nearly $120 million, which was a record at the time.

In 1994, on the opening day of the Lillehammer Winter Olympics, thieves smashed a second-story window of the National Gallery of Norway. Using a ladder, they cut the 1893 painted version free and escaped in about 50 seconds.

The painting was recovered undamaged months later in a sting operation.

In 2004, masked gunmen stole The Scream and Madonna (also painted by Munch) from the Munch Museum.

And they did it in broad daylight.

Worried about tracking devices, the thieves abandoned their getaway car and left the frames inside.

The art itself was recovered in 2006 with relatively minor damage.

Six men were charged with the theft.

Much more to come from Art Presence this month!

Our open call exhibit, Imaginarium: A Carnival of Crows, continues through November 1st. Stop by Wed-Sun, 12pm-5pm to see dozens of beautiful pieces from local artists in this October display.

We also have our Third Saturday class on the 17th, 1:30pm-3pm. This month is skull painting with Carol Branan in preparation for Dia de los Muertes.

In January 1886, Vincent Van Gogh enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium hoping to learn how to paint people.

The school didn't make it easy.

Students copied prints, drew plaster casts, and studied skeletons before they were allowed near a live model.

Van Gogh called it "damned boring" and only lasted a few weeks before quitting.

But he painted the skeleton assignment anyway, and added a lit cigarette between its teeth. Even though the exercise felt "damned boring," at least he could add some fun.

Though he never mentioned this oil painting in any letters, Van Gogh's sister-in-law later named it "Skull with a Cigarette."

Many historians view it as a memento mori (a symbolic reminder of death) or a reflection of Van Gogh's own poor health and dental problems at the time. The Van Gogh Museum describes it as a "juvenile joke" or a satirical jab at the Academy's teaching methods.

Regardless, he looks like the only guy in the room having a good time.

We had an amazing opening reception yesterday for this month's Imaginarium exhibit!

All the ghouls, goblins, and ghosts brought their Halloween spirit to Jacksonville as we celebrated the season with finger food and friends.

Our carnival of crows, ravens, owls, and more are on display all October. Stop by the gallery Wednesday thru Sunday, 12pm to 5pm.

Our Saturday opening reception is TODAY 1pm to 4pm!

October always brings out the ghouls, goblins, and crows.

And even though crows get a bad rap for being raucous thieves, we think they deserve a celebration of their clever carny personalities.

This year’s open call Imaginarium show brings a caravan of crows, ravens, owls, and vintage Halloween vibes to Jacksonville.

Come meet many of the featured artists during our first Saturday Opening Reception.
