In Loving Memory of International Canadian Punjabi Artist Jarnail Singh (1958–2025)

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Jarnail Singh, an internationally acclaimed Canadian Punjabi artist, who left this world while visiting India. He took his final breath at his home studio in Chandigarh, with his beloved wife, artist Baljit Kaur, by his side—his muse and inspiration for his celebrated Phulkari paintings.

Jarnail Singh was a visionary artist and historian, best known for his extraordinary contributions to Sikh and Punjabi heritage through art. His powerful murals and paintings, including the Gadri Baba stories, brought to life the sacrifices and struggles of Sikh revolutionaries. His work has been showcased across Canada and beyond, including exhibits at the North Delta Library in Surrey. His ability to capture Sikh history with such depth and emotion has cemented his legacy as a pioneer in preserving and narrating Sikh and Punjabi history through visual storytelling.

Beyond his artistic brilliance, Jarnail was a dear friend, mentor, and devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife, Baljit Kaur, and his two talented children, Niti and Juber, who will continue to carry forward his creative legacy. Those who knew him will cherish the beautiful memories, laughter, and passion he brought to life and art.

His passing is a monumental loss to the global Sikh and Punjabi art community, but his spirit will forever live on through his breathtaking murals, paintings, and artistic legacy.

The family will share details regarding his last rites in due course.

Rest in peace, Jarnail Singh. Your art and legacy will remain eternal.

Durga- The most Powerful Female Energy

It is interesting to see the two images of Divine powers from India and greek. One is Dionisio from greek and another from India The great Goddess Durga. Both rides tiger. Dionisio is the Olympian god of wine, pleasure and festivity and wild frenzy. His attributes are a drinking wine cup, a pine cone tipped with staff and a crown of ivy.

In Indian religion Goddess Durga sitting astride a tiger, have many forms and known as Kali, Bhagavati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, kandilini, Java and Rajashwari.

Durga means unattainable. She was born from the energies of the male divinities when the gods lost battle with the asuras. All the energies of the gods united in the form of the Goddess. She is adorned with auspicious weapons and ornaments and blazing with thousands of suns. She is the personification of Cosmic energy. She is holding sward, trishul , a cup and shield. The artist is summing up the moment of the wrath of the Goddess when ‘’she lifted to her lips, serenely a bowl filled with the inebriating invigorating liquor of the divine life force and when she sapped the matchless drink.”

Perhaps the artist here tried to see how Durga can kill the evils.

Holi- the festival of love

Holi is the festival which is celebrated in full enthusiasm in India. Most of the old texts threw light on the festival. Even the Mughal emperor Akbar was celebrating it on a large scale. It is the festival of love. People remain free for the whole day and get uo early to celebrate Holi. They come out with guile or pitckaris full of water colours in groups. They beat drums and do fun.

This festival marks the victory of good over evil. It commemorates the victory of god Vishnu as Narasimha Narayana over Hiranyakashipu and Holika burned. His sister was Holika who helped her brother in killing Prahlada,a worshipper of Vishnu. She sat with him on a pyre while wearing a cloak that protected her from fire. But Prahlada instead, In that night Vishnu killed the demon and protected the devotee. In many parts ,a large pyre is lit on the night before Holi to celebrate this occasion. In some of the the areas even of Punjab people do it. They collect the wood and garland of cow dung cakes with small image of Holika they all burn it as a symbol of evil and goodness. In some places the story of Krishna and Radha is the centre of interest. Both fell in love. Krishna’s skin was dark blue and Radha’s was fair . On occasion Krishna playfully colored her face during a game with her and other milkmaid. Perhaps this is the origin of the colored water and powder throwing.

Holi is the festival of Spring. The entire landscape comes to life after a cool winter Any snow begins to melt . New plants grow. Flowering plants bloom. It is always full moon on Holi festival.Moon face is illuminated by the sun. The full Moon is a time to be receptive, to get light and awareness of spirit in to ones emotional and physical body.

It brings out the strongest emotions. It brings good luck. It magnifies every thing. Holi festival is celebration of life. When one throw the gulal or splash the person with colours then the body and mind responds on its own. Mostly the personal emotions melt and become the source of Move on ,Move on…Coloured pichkaris are fixed spontaneously on the specific parts of the body and facial expressions speak on its own. Colors become the means of joy and happiness.
