The garden at Yeardley is a great place to reflect or rest during your Jamestown trip. Filled with gorgeous plants and herbs that reflect the kinds of flora that may have been here in the 17th century, the garden is lovingly cared for by a group of local gardeners, including many Master Gardeners. Be sure to stop by when you visit and enjoy the blooms!

At the end of May in 1620, 90 young women recruited by the Virginia Company arrived in Virginia to marry planters. In most cases, their new husbands were expected to reimburse the company for their passage and other expenses. Despite the risks faced by new settlers, the prospect of better financial opportunity and greater legal freedom in Virginia was attractive to some English women, especially those from families of limited means.

Learn more about women's roles and impact at Jamestown in our Women at Jamestown tour, led by research historian Dr. Amy Stallings. Explore the walking tour schedule at historicjamestowne.org.

A rebellion is simmering at Jamestown and Virginia Governor Sir William Berkeley is baffled at how his cousin-by-marriage, Nathaniel Bacon, has become a traitor. He turns to the rebel's uncle and namesake, Colonial Nathaniel Bacon, to try and understand the young upstart and, hopefully, calm the threatening uprising.

Join us this Saturday for the next installment in "The Unfolding Rebellion," sponsored by the Jamestowne Society. See the full program details and times at historicjamestowne.org/visit/calendar/the-unfolding-rebellion-kinsman-and-namesake/.

There's a new edition to our historic trades programs! Turn north as you walk through the information/ticketing center to find the Wood Yard, where carpenter Jesse is slowly, but surely breaking down a gigantic tulip poplar as well as a red oak tree for use in future building projects.

When the Virginia Company arrived at James Fort in mid-May, they did not initially build a palisade, but after skirmishes with the Paspehegh, they needed to build fortifications quickly. Carpenters were an essential part of trades at Jamestown, from constructing basic living quarters like the Barracks to the lumber trade that would developed later in the 17th century.

It's turtle season at Jamestown! In the late spring, turtles of all types become more active and hatchlings begin to emerge. To protect them during this important time, the Loop Drive at Historic Jamestowne is temporarily closed to vehicles.

If you plan to explore the Loop Drive, bring your walking shoes or bike, but keep an eye out - baby turtles can be the size of a silver dollar and blend in to the color of the road 🐢 Thanks for your understanding!

🚧🐢 Caution: Turtles Crossing on Jamestown Island 🐢🚧

The Jamestown Island Loop Drive is temporarily closed to vehicles as park scientists continue a multi year migration study monitoring seasonal turtle movements across the island. This temporary closure gives us an opportunity to learn how turtles use the island’s wetlands, forests, and marshes — and to understand if reducing traffic can help protect them.

🚶‍♀️🚴 Visitors on foot or bike may continue to enjoy the loop, but please ⚠️use caution and stay alert⚠️- some turtles are as small as a quarter, and their coloring blends in with the pavement, making them hard to spot, even for walkers and bicyclists traveling at low speeds.

Why it’s important:
• Spring and fall are peak turtle activity seasons
• Early findings suggest fewer vehicles = fewer turtle fatalities
• Your cooperation helps us collect accurate, meaningful data

With your support, park staff can better understand seasonal turtle behavior and use this research to guide future conservation decisions.

📅 Loop Drive reopens to vehicles on June 11.
