The Jasper County Historical Museum will be closed this weekend in observance of Memorial Day.

We will pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is part of the story we are entrusted to preserve, and we remember them with gratitude and respect.

We will resume regular museum hours following the holiday weekend

Today’s museum visit turned into a sweet little adventure! 🦋🍦🐚
Our visitors found the CASA Butterfly as part of the CASA of the Sabine Neches Region Butterfly Hunt, enjoyed an ice cream sandwich at our Soda Fountain Exhibit, and then joined us for a fossil hunt.

One of the fossils we looked at is believed to be an ammonite. Ammonites were sea animals that lived a very, very long time ago, when ancient oceans covered many places. Their curled shells remind us that the land we know today has a much older story beneath it.

Here in Jasper County, we often think of pine trees, rivers, and local history — but fossils help us imagine an even older world. They give us clues about ancient seas, forests, and the many changes the land has seen over time.

That is what makes a museum visit so special. One stop can take you from butterflies, to soda fountains, to fossils from long ago. History is everywhere — sometimes even right under our feet! 🏛️

Today we remember the birth of George Washington Smyth, born May 16, 1803.

Smyth’s life and service are closely tied to the early history of Jasper County. In 1830, he was appointed surveyor for Bevil’s Settlement and later became the first judge of Bevil Municipality. By 1836, residents of Jasper Municipality elected him to the Convention of 1836, where he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

His public service continued for decades. Smyth helped establish the Texas–United States boundary, served in the Texas House of Representatives, took part in the 1845 Constitutional Convention, became the second Commissioner of the General Land Office, and later represented Texas in the 33rd United States Congress.

In his 1857 autobiography, Smyth wrote of arriving in this area and being “charmed with the appearance of the country about Jasper.”

Today, we honor George Washington Smyth not only as a Texas statesman, but as part of Jasper County’s own story.

Today in Jasper County History 📜

Stephen Williams was born on May 9, 1760, in North Carolina. A soldier, blacksmith, and early East Texas settler, Williams lived a remarkable life that connected Jasper County to three major chapters of American and Texas history.

He served in the American Revolution, helped guard naval yards during the War of 1812, and, at age 75, volunteered for military service during the Texas Revolution alongside four of his grandsons.

Williams later claimed land and a town lot in Jasper. He died in April 1839 and was originally buried at his home in Jasper. As part of the Texas Centennial celebration, his remains were moved to the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

His story reminds us how deeply Jasper County is woven into the larger story of Texas and our nation. 🤠

Rodeo Parade Day brought downtown Jasper to life, and we were glad to open the Museum doors for a little extra hometown hospitality. 🤠

Families stepped inside to cool off, look around, visit our soda fountain, and enjoy free ice cream sandwiches while waiting for the parade.

From the music and horses to the flags, floats, students, riders, and families gathered along the street, it was a sweet reminder that history is not only something we preserve — it is something we are still making together.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Jasper County Historical Museum today. We loved being part of the celebration. ❤️

🍨SODA FOUNTAIN EXHIBIT!🍔
Back in the day, a trip to the drug store was about much more than picking up medicine.

Imagine stepping through the front door on a warm Jasper afternoon. You’d hear the soft hum of ceiling fans, the clink of glass bottles, and the sound of neighbors visiting across the soda fountain counter. Children might spin slowly on the stools while waiting for a hand-mixed soda, milkshake, or ice cream float.

The local drug store was often a gathering place — part pharmacy, part café, part community center. People came not only for prescriptions, but to catch up on town news, meet friends after school, enjoy a cold Coca-Cola, or share a sandwich and a slice of pie.

Unlike today’s fast trips through modern pharmacies, these spaces encouraged folks to slow down and visit awhile. The pharmacist often knew generations of families by name. Teenagers gathered here after football games, families stopped in after church, and neighbors shared stories at the counter.

Our soda fountain exhibit is a replica meant to help visitors imagine what that experience may have felt like here in Jasper County — a time when the drug store was part of the heartbeat of the community.
