Check out the first Jekyll Island Museum! 🫖

The museum opened December 11, 1954, in Indian Mound Cottage, and was founded and run by historian Tallu Fish. Displays included taxidermy, Rockefeller-era furniture, and even chamber pots lining the staircase. Tallu lived in the servants section of the cottage for some time.

Meet Frederic Baker 🫏

Baker made his fortune in warehouses and a New York tannery, and served as a director of the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was Treasurer of the Jekyll Island Club, advocated for Faith Chapel’s construction in 1904, and built his cottage, Solterra, in 1890. Here, he rides one of his Jerusalem donkeys beside Moss Cottage.

A stage with a story 🎭

Built in 1889 as a dormitory for unmarried white employees during the Club Era, The Annex hosted a variety of theater performances in the summer of 1948, from comedies to mysteries. At that time, it was known as Thompson Hall, with its performance space called the Crook-Ye-Neck Theatre. Performers were members of the Edith Russell Players, who took the stage six nights a week for 10 weeks.

Who's ready for a day at the beach? 🏖️

While not an early favorite, Club members and their guests would occasionally spend a day along Jekyll’s beaches, typically in March or April when the water warmed. Pictured here are the children of John Albright—Nancy, Susan, Fuller, and Betty—enjoying the shore in the 1910s.
