Benjamin Woollcott is a contemporary painter based in New York City. Growing up, he often visited museums while traveling, and this is where he found his love for art. The innovation and genius of the many 19th century artists inspired him to explore the medium of painting himself. He trained at Colby College, refining his technique and developing his identity as a painter. Benjamin’s process involves focusing his mind on a single emotion or memory and allowing his subconscious to take over. Through automatic drawing and painting, he creates complex visual representations of an internal place.

"Art that halts you is an art that moves you"

"My journey in art began at a very young age, growing up in Liberia, West Africa. I vividly remember the bustle of life in the Liberian open markets and on the streets. There were people from many nationalities who worked and lived in the country at the time, and I was fortunate to have had the immersion in that multi-cultural world. I believe it provided me with a wider lens from which to view and understand the world around me.
After my family moved to the United States, I obtained my formal training in fine arts. I fell in love with oil painting, and it has been my primary medium since. My earlier works favored post-impressionism, but later, my art gravitated toward abstraction - and the works of artists like DeKooning, Po***ck, Rothko, and Hilma Af Klint – masters whose works fostered inspiration toward my pivot into abstract art.
For the past few years, I served as a maritime captain of an ocean research vessel in New England. I believe that my painting style received some influence from the thinking process inherent to maritime training and my time at sea. I saw my artwork take yet another pivot, adding dimensional changes to my abstract pieces. It is with this example of evolutionary changes that art transforms and progresses, and I find my passion for abstract art is heightened with each experiential change and new direction."
