LSC is thrilled to share some wonderful news! On June 1st, the 5 Northern Diamondback Terrapins were nurtured during the winter as a part of the Project Terrapin Hatchling Head Start program returned to their native salt marsh habitat along the Jersey shore! Since their arrival, these young turtles have, on average, grown to nearly 6x their original size. This success is made possible by the warm, secure, and attentive care they received while with us.
Diamondback terrapins hold the unique distinction of being the only turtles globally that reside exclusively in brackish coastal marshes, serving as a critical indicator of the health of these ecosystems. In New Jersey, due to their dwindling wild populations, terrapins are recognized as a species of special concern, highlighting the urgency of conservation initiatives. By supporting them through their most vulnerable early months, we can provide these hatchlings a genuine opportunity to thrive in the wild.
Over the last two decades, has documented a significant decrease in nesting numbers. Wild hatchlings struggle against challenges such as human encroachment, habitat destruction, and heavy nest predation. These little turtles were found late in the season, long after they should have been tucked away for winter. Giving them a protected place to grow has helped them become stronger and better prepared for life in the marsh.
This release is part of a coordinated conservation effort with Project Terrapin, whose teams rescue hatchlings, monitor nesting sites, and lead community‑driven conservation across the Barnegat Bay watershed. Liberty Science Center is proud to play a role in this work, and are excited to watch these five head start graduates swim off into their new lives. Stay tuned for the next chapter in our ongoing commitment to protecting New Jersey’s coastal wildlife!
