Darwin was an inveterate smoker. At the age of 73 he declared that a cigarette rested him more after hard labor than anything else.

Samuel Staples, of Concord. Mass., was famous for his friends, among whom were Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott, and Bull, the inventor of the Concord grape.

Sergeant O’Keefe, who spent five years in the observatory on Pike’s Peak says the lowest temperature observed was fifty degrees below zero and the highest was sixty two degrees above.

The Arctic fox shows the greatest change in color of its coat throughout the year. Its summer coat is dark blue, and gradually lightens until the snow begins to fall, when it is pure white.

Wednesday afternoon, May 22, Mr. John Mowery, and aged and highly respected citizen died after an illness of about two months. Aged 68 years.

The seventh annual commencement exercises of the Jersey Shore High School were held in the Baptist Church.

The new Presbyterian Church will be dedicated on Sunday, July 14th.

Lost- a watch fob chain beyond the suspension bridge in Pine Creek township.

Several new and costly monuments will be erected in the cemetery this summer.

C.H. Gano has opened a tin shop on Allegheny Street in the Third Ward.

Robert McCullough, Durell A. Bingman and Dr. M.L. Mench were elected elders in the Presbyterian Church.

The old Presbyterian church property that was erected in 1850 and partly destroyed by fire in 1893 was purchased by L.H. Willard of Rutland, Vt. It is understood that the new owner will open an agricultural store on the first floor and finish the second floor for an opera house.

Mrs. Carrie B. Sides has accepted chairmanship of the committee on antiquities in this place for the centennial celebration of Lycoming County at Williamsport in July.

At a recent meeting of the managers, it was decided to hold the 22nd Annual Grangers’ Picnic Exhibition at Williams Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., August 26-31, 1895.

A new Evangelical church was dedicated at Tylersville, Sugar Valley, last Sunday.

A head on collision between a passenger train and shifting engine occurred on the Beech Creek railroad near viaduct on Monday morning. Engineer Palmer of the passenger and the engineer of the shifter were injured. The passenger train was delayed about four hours.

Those who remember the terrible battle that took place some four years ago between the Indians of the Pine Ridge agency and the United States regular troops at the place known as Wounded Knee may have forgotten that a baby girl was found on the body of her mother four days after the fight. That Indian baby is alive and well, and is now the adopted daughter of General Colby, who took her under his care as soon as she was found and brought her to his wife.

Outer blinds for windows were unknown until the fourteenth century. The Venetian or interior blinds are so called because they were first used in Venice.

Boo, the exclamation used to frighten children, is a corruption of Bob, the name of a famous Gothic General.

On Tuesday evening at a little past ten o’clock James E. Nice died at his late residence on River Street. He was born I this town on July 2, 1840, and thus reached the age of 54 years, 10 months and 19 days.

The Commencement exercises of the Jersey Shore High School will take place on Tuesday evening, May 28, at 8 o’clock in the Baptist Church.

The Nippenose Woolen Mill placed nine new looms in the factory a few days ago.

The stained glass windows are being put in the new Presbyterian Church this week.

The new ballpark on the Commons was inaugurated Saturday afternoon last when a game of baseball was played between the Demorest Juniors of Williamsport and Capt. Harry Straw’s Colts of this place. The Demorests were victorious 19-12.

Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Humes, accompanied by their daughter, Miss Rachel Humes, and
Miss Mary Hepburn, will start for Europe about the middle of June.

The following is a list of letters remaining in the Jersey Shore Post Office for the week ending May 20, 1895: Miss Emma Dick and Daniel Wirth.

The date has been fixed for the grand demonstration at Hecla Park. The date will be Thursday, June 20.

The principal obstacle to the extension of the Beech Creek railroad from Mahaffey into Indiana County has been the trouble in procuring right of way from Robert Mahaffey.

Commencement essays and orations will be abolished by the Allentown High School.

The compulsory education bill, which had been signed by the Governor and is now law, requires that every child in the Commonwealth between the ages of 8 and 13 years shall attend for at least 16 weeks in each year a school in which common English branches are taught.

Lycoming County, having completed 100 years of history on the 13th day of June of last month, proposes to celebrate this important event at Williamsport on the 24th, 31 and 4th of July.

The highest price for oil was in January 1860 when it was $20 a barrel. The lowest price was 5 cents a barrel in November 1861.

Lady Charlotte Schrieber, who has just died in England, was distinguished not only in London society, but also in many charitable undertakings.

Princess Mercedes, of Spain who is now in her thirteenth year, enjoys the exceptional distinction, for so young a girl, of being an ex-queen.

Those who are skeptical of spiritual manifestations in Indianapolis know that Mrs. Hendrick, widow of Vice President Hendricks, professes to have received messages from the spirit land and signed by the vice President.

What is the use of a 29th day of February? The reason is not all years are 365 days long and that the earth make a year by travelling around the sun and it takes 365 days, five hours, forty-eight minutes and seven-tenths seconds to make the journey. We let the odd fractions of a day run on until they make a whole day, which we tack on to February.

A cheap and practical method of signaling between vessels at sea is suggested by Supt. Houghton.

A new artificial pavement will adorn the front of Dr. Uriah Reed’s business on Main Street in a few days.

It will only be a short time until Jersey Shore will organize a county fair.

Tuesday May 21st communion services will be held at the A.M.E. church on North Lincoln Avenue.

The present condition of the old graveyard on Broad Street is a disgrace to the town.

The special centennial committee for Jersey Shore has been chosen.

A gold cure sanitorium will soon be located in this place, probably at the house of Dr. G.H. Cline.

The following is a list of letters remaining in the Jersey Shore Post Office for the week ending May 15, 1895: Thomas Colosimo and Barbia Freedly.

Meginness’ condensed history of Lycoming County gives a record of all the townships, when erected, why so named, their acres and population.

The Renovo Record says the Pennsylvania Railroad Relief department has issued an order making Renovo headquarters for the P.& E. R.R. division physicians and Drs. Skull and Schnell will be transferred from Williamsport.

Two men of Elk County, one of whom was the sheriff, were fined twenty-five dollars by a Driftwood Justice of the peace for killing trout in a steam with lime.

George S. Good & Co. have closed a contract with the Coudersport and Port Allegheny railroad company to construct a railway line from Coudersport to Ulysses, which is the terminus of the Fall Brook Road.

The boom in oil has started many operations in Potter County.

A cloudburst at Roaring Branch Tuesday afternoon of last week carried away two road bridges, uprooted trees and caught C.W. Alden, who was fishing in Lycoming Creek, the water carrying him quite a distance downstream.
