250th Anniversary Declaration of Independence Series

June 7 - Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution urging Congress to declare independence from Great Britain.

June 8/10 - Moderates expressed their reluctance to declare independence and secured a postponement of Congress for three weeks by a vote of seven to five.

June 11 - Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston were appointed to a committee to draft a declaration of independence

BATTLES OF LEXINGTON & CONCORD-19 APR 1775
The Battles of Lexington and Concord, fought on April 19, 1775, marked the outbreak of armed conflict between Great Britain and its American colonies. British troops marched from Boston to seize colonial weapons stored in Concord, but local militias—warned the night before by riders such as Paul Revere and William Dawes—mobilized quickly. At dawn on Lexington Green, a brief and chaotic skirmish left several militiamen dead, and as the British continued to Concord, they encountered stronger resistance at the North Bridge, where colonial forces fired the “shot heard ’round the world.” During the British retreat to Boston, thousands of Minutemen attacked from behind walls, trees, and fields, inflicting heavy casualties. These engagements transformed political tension into full‑scale revolution and united the colonies in armed resistance.

250th Anniversary Declaration of Independence Series

PAUL REVERE RIDE-18 APR 1775
Paul Revere’s Ride took place on the night of April 18, 1775, when Boston silversmith and patriot Paul Revere set out to warn colonial leaders and local militias that British troops were marching from Boston toward Lexington and Concord to seize weapons and arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock. After receiving intelligence that the British were on the move, Revere crossed the Charles River, rode through the countryside alerting households and militia captains, and helped mobilize the network of “Minutemen” who would confront British forces the next morning. Although Revere was detained before reaching Concord, his warning—carried on by William Dawes, Samuel Prescott, and many local riders—ensured that colonial militias were ready for the opening battles of the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775.
