Our staff, Blake & Carson enjoying their time in jail. After your tour, be sure to have your picture taken "behind the bars". We are open daily (not Wednesday) through Labor Day Monday (9/2). Peggy Sue has been a great addition to our guide staff this year! She standing under the gallows & telling her group of the men that were hanged here.
The Old Jail Museum is best known as the site of the hanging of seven Irish coal miners known as "Molly Maguires" in the 1800s. Basically "The Molly Maguires" were Irish Coal Miners (the first union) striving toward better working conditions & pay in the mines. Several "Molly Maguires" were accused of murder, & through unfair trials were convicted & hanged. Seven inside our jail, with a total of 20 hanged throughout Pennsylvania.
On June 21, 1877, today known as the "Day of the Rope", Alexander Campbell, Edward Kelly, Michael Doyle & John Donohue were hanged at the same time on gallows erected inside the Old Jail Museum cell block. On March 28, 1878, Thomas P. Fisher was hanged here, and on January 14, 1879, James McDonnell & Charles Sharp were hanged on the same gallows.
