Did you know that the last battle of the Civil War occured on May 12-13, 1865 at Palmito Ranch, Texas. A month later the last slaves were freed. “Juneteenth“ commemorates the freeing of these slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. On “Juneteenth“ General Gordon Granger’s Union troops marched into Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved peoples were freed.

Did you know that the story about Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag is more likely just that, a story? The Second Continental Congress, on June 14, 1777, adopted a flag resolution; “that the flag of the 13 United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white on a blue field…“ In 1949 President Truman signed National Flag Day into law. Over the years the pattern of stars varied. In 1912 President Taft standardized a 48 star flag into six horizontal rows of eight. The 49 and 50 star flags have different patterns. The current version added its 50th star on July 4, 1960 after Hawaii became the 50th state. June 14 is also the US Army’s birthday of establishment in 1775. The flags will be flying at the Gold Star on that and every day while progress is being made on a new military nurse exhibit.

Did you know that on October 14, 1947, the first manned aircraft passed through the sound barrier? Air Force test pilot, Chuck Yeager, was the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1.06) entering the supersonic age. On that October day, flying his Bell X-1 rocket plane, Yeager transited what was considered a barrier that a pilot could not pass without destruction of the aircraft. Instead, his rocket plane triggered a sonic boom echoing over the desert floor. He went on to fly a Bell X-1A in 1953 at twice the speed of sound. Yeager retired at the rank of Brigadier General in 1975, having made his mark in history. Yeager was portrayed by Sam Shepard in the movie "The Right Stuff".
