Welcome to official page of Johnson Hall State Historic Site, the 1763 Georgian-style estate of Anglo-Irish immigrant Sir William Johnson and Molly Brant/ Konwatsi'tsiaienni of the Mohawks. Located in Johnstown, NY, Johnson Hall State Historic Site was the 1763 Georgian-style estate of Anglo-Irish immigrant Sir William Johnson (1715 - 1774) and Molly Brant/ Konwatsi'tsiaienni of the Mohaw

ks (1736-1796). Their combined influence made them the most powerful family in the colonial Mohawk Valley, deeply impacting the diplomacy of the region and their wider worlds. Johnson's influence with the leadership of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee greatly influenced England's victory over France for control of colonial North America. For his service, the British Crown bestowed upon Johnson the title of Baronet, and later appointed him Superintendent of Indian Affairs, a position to which he devoted himself and held throughout his life. Differing cultures, traditions and languages combined to create a unique life for the Johnson family, with the Hall bustling with activity as home life and business life intermingled daily. Visitors included members and representatives of various Native Nations and tribes, sometimes numbering in the hundreds at Council gatherings. The home was the centerpiece of a 700-acre working estate, with elaborate formal gardens, vegetable plots, orchards, a mill, blacksmith shop, Indian trade store, barns, enslaved and tenant housing, and other support buildings. Following the death of Sir William in 1774, Molly and her children left Johnson Hall, and his eldest son John inherited both the property and title of Baronet. By 1776, the new Revolutionary government forced this Loyalist family and many of their supporters to flee to Canada under threat of imprisonment and violence. Johnson Hall was seized and looted, with most of its remaining contents subsequently sold at auction following the war. Johnson Hall remained a private residence through 1906, when it was acquired by the State of New York and opened to the public as a State Historic Site. Today, Johnson Hall continues to welcome visitors and interpret the site's colonial history through guided tours, on-site and outreach educational programs, and special events.

We are only a little more than a week away from our commemoration reenactment of the confiscation of Johnson Hall, and are excited to introduce you to another of the talented and dedicated people working to bring this history to life!

Emma Cross is a historian who lives in Williamsburg, Virginia. Immersed in history from a young age, Cross comes from a family of storytellers, and has always been drawn to the amazing stories that history holds.

Starting at the age of 4 she began volunteering and working in history museums which led to a 30-year career in front-line museum work. Many of those years were spent at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in different departments, including Historic Trades and first-person character work as Clementina Rind, the first woman printer in Virginia.

Cross holds papers from CWF as a Journeyman Leather Breeches Maker, and has been able to present her research on this topic and others at conferences, lectures, and workshops nationally.

Cross is also the owner and director of Meadow and Stars, llc, a historical performance company that focuses on telling history in engaging and informative ways. Her current work focuses around telling the stories of tradeswomen who impacted 18th century life and women following American and British armies during the Revolution, with a particular focus on Baroness Frederika Riedesel.

On May 16th and 17th, Cross will portray Lady Mary "Polly" Watts Johnson, bringing to life the story of this fascinating and impactful 18th century woman. Johnson Hall is thrilled to collaborate with her for this 250th anniversary event as we work to share the many stories of Johnson Hall and those who lived here in 1776.

As we draw closer to the big commemoration of the Confiscation of Johnson Hall, we are excited to once again welcome the folks from Claus' Rangers, who will be portraying a number of roles over the course of the weekend.

Clausโ€™ Rangers interpret the experiences of British Indian Department officials, liaisons, rangers, civilians, distaff, and Loyalist Refugees during the period of the Revolution. Over the course of the event weekend, they will portray members of the Johnson Hall and Johnstown community, and their reactions to the May 1776 raid and occupation. Early in the conflict, rebel raids and occupation of the Johnstown area made it increasingly dangerous for British officials and Loyalists to remain. Many fled to Canada, while those who stayed (often including the families of those who escaped) faced harassment, arrest, and violence.
