Opening Weekend Special: Kid Spark Storytime & Inventing Lab with Kid Spark!

Join us on Saturday, June 6th during our opening weekend for a hands-on STEAM adventure designed especially for our youngest inventors! Included with paid admission — no additional fee BUT paid science center admission is required!

Kid Spark Storytime & Inventing Session
Noon–12:45 p.m.
Best for ages 4–7

After an engaging storytime, children will jump into an early inventors experience to accompany the storytime, where they'll explore, create, build, and solve challenges through play-based learning. This experience is open to the first 24 children who sign up.

Due to limited space, participation is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Perfect for curious minds who love to imagine, build, and discover!

Friends, our STEAM Day celebration at the Exploreum is coming up June 24 and we have over 200 summer school 5th, 6th, and 7th graders coming during the day and then scads of public coming later in the afternoon, and I don't have anyone doing hands-on of the following:

Construction
Color mixing/hair dye
Baking/food science
Small engine repair
Robotics
Medical sciences
Physics
Electrical engineering
Civil engineering
Structural engineering
Comic books/graphic design
Plants/native science
Nano-tech
Veterinary

There is NO cost to table and there will be LOTS of young people here who dream of careers in these fields. Tagging people would be okay. A warm introduction, or you yourself agreeing to come engage the young people, would be even better!!!!!! Contact [email protected].

Nearly 50 years ago, the site that became the former Joplin Public Library and now the home of the Schroeder Family Exploreum was forever changed by tragedy and history.

The Connor Hotel once stood proudly at 4th & Main as one of Joplin’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1908, it welcomed generations of travelers, families, and community members through its doors and was considered one of the grandest hotels in the Southwest.

In November 1978, while preparing for demolition to make way for the new public library, the hotel unexpectedly collapsed one day before its scheduled implosion. Three workers were trapped in the rubble. Alfred Summers was rescued after 82 hours, while Thomas Oakes and Frederick Coe tragically lost their lives. The event captured national attention and remains one of the most remembered moments in Joplin history.

Today, as the former library begins a new chapter as the Schroeder Family Exploreum, we want to honor the lives connected to this place , the joy, the memories, the tragedy, and the resilience that shaped our community.

History lives within these walls, and we are deeply grateful for all those who came before us. As we prepare to welcome new generations of children and families through these doors, we hope to continue creating meaningful memories and history for Joplin for years to come. ❤️

As we get closer to opening the Schroeder Family Exploreum, we’ve been reflecting on all of the amazing STEAM events we’ve hosted and attended along the way 🧪✨💙

From community festivals and hands-on activities to meeting so many incredible families, students, educators, and supporters , it’s truly been such a blast.

Every event has helped shape the vision for the Exploreum, and we are SO excited to finally open our doors and continue bringing creativity, curiosity, and learning to our community 🎉

For years, these windows watched families, students, and our community fill the parking lot of the old public library. 📚✨ Now, almost 10 years later, they’re ready to welcome that excitement all over again as the new Schroeder Family Exploreum opens its doors.

We cannot wait to see these spaces filled with curiosity, creativity, laughter, and STEAM fun once again. ❤️
