- - Students Win Prizes For Cheers - -
The Chevron - December 1931 -

A contest was held recently for the purpose of securing new cheers. Students who wished to enter handed in cheers, either original ones or ones heard in other schools. The judges of this contest were Mr. Ramsdell, Mr. Kenyon and Kaiton Yawney.

The cheer contest closed on October 27th, with the following results:

Robert Clements took the first prize of $2 with the "J! O! Rah Rah;" yell.

Charles Turner won the second prize of $1 for the double "J cheer.

Fracnes Doran won the third prize of 75 cents with the whistle yell.

Several students are trying out for the position of cheer leader.

Sometime (in the early part of December) the school in a body will select one girl and one boy to be official cheer leader.

Warren Smith offered the following resolution: "The stockholders of the Veterans' Memorial Association of Jordan, N. Y., approve the building of a swimming pool and park area at the site of old reservoir as a memo. rial to service men and women from this vicinity-a suitable placque to be erected and the project dedicated to the veter-ans." This resolution was seconded by Harry Ceratt and carried with no dissenting votes.

Ellis Gilbert offered the following resolution: "The stockholders of the Veterans' Memorial Association of Jordan, N. Y approve using the funds on hand and undertake to raise approximately $3700 additional from unpaid pledges and new pledges."
This resolution was seconded by Reginald Maitland and carried with no dissenting votes.

Dr. Whiteley stated that the Merchants National Bank would lend whatever funds were needed to complete the project. A resolution authorizing the officers of the Veteran's Memorial Association to borrow from the Merchants Bank was approved by the stockholders.

The proposal of the contractor for his work was read for information.

Aug., '48.-Work on the Jordan swimming pool is proceeding rapidly. It is expected that the concrete work and the grading of the parking area around the pool will be finished this week
or early next week. The pool is being erected by the Jordan Veterans Memorial Association.

Work on the pool is being done by a private contractor, but the cost has been reduced and the work speeded along by volunteer trucks and drivers. Last week the following drove trucks during the weekend: James Seeley, Hugh McPeak, Joseph McMullen, Harold
Baumgartner, Ned Bond. Claire Bond, Kenneth Skutt, Tod Sloan, James VanVechten and James Bateman. The volunteer drivers hauled 70 loads of gravel.

A summer recreational program began on the campus of Jordan Central School in June of 1948. The program had attraction for all ages of the school district. Pre-school and children of the first four grades will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. under the direction of Coach George Wakeman and Charlene Buck. Two mothers will be asked to help each day. Mothers of the Parent-Teacher Club will sponsor the program the week of July 6. Intermediate children, from fifth thru twelvth grades and adults will meet 7 to 9 p.m. Games sports and other activities suitable to each age group have been planned. Adequate equipment has been bought and more will be built. This was a program for all ages sponsored by the Community Council.

The first rehearsal of the Jordan Community band was held in the school April 21, 1948. The band was open to anyone who could play an instrument. About 40 persons had indicated their wish to become members. Ferman MacKaig was director of the band, sponsored by the Jordan Community Council. The first practice was held the following month in the school auditorium. Some 15 adults had expressed an interest in joining the band. The adult membership joined the members of the school band who wanted some playing during the summer. Many band concerts were planned.

The first Liederkranz chorus sponsored in Jordan by the Community Council, was held May 11, 1948. A program of nine chorus numbers and six solo numbers was directed by Max Grah with Harris Southwick as accompanist. John J. Dinet was tenor soloist and the Rev. John
L. Daley the baritone soloist.

Outdoor dances started July 9 1948 in the business section of Jordan, sponsored by the Community Council. Special lighting was instaled. Jack McNabb’s orchestra furnished the music and Dick Robillard was the caller. The Jordan Community Band played prior to the dances. The area was sprayed with DDT fog by McCormack and Christopher.

Jordan organizations were asked to provide a committee of four to manage the dances. scheduled throughout the summer.

The Jordan skating rink was dedicated January 21, 1948. Ann Shepherd was chosen ice queen.
Attendants were Marlene Kellogg, Joyce Morehouse, Marilyn Eaton and Dorothy Loveless.

An impressive array of county and local dignataries were on hand Although built in the bed of the Erie Canal, the first year's success was never duplicated due to warmer weather and the rink draining out
