Many of you have asked me what this movie is about.
It's an inspiring story of resilience and determination, following the daily lives of young people from low- to middle-income backgrounds as they strive to create a brighter future.

Black History Month Spotlight: Ernest Gene Brown

Ernest Gene Brown's heartfelt reflections continue to uplift the legacy of George Washington Carver High School in Kannapolis.

A proud member of the Class of 1962, Mr. Brown represents a generation whose lives were shaped within the halls of Carver. At 81 years young, he still remembers most of the school song cherished by the Eagles faithful—a testament to how deeply the school’s spirit remains woven into his heart.

The Carver community hasn’t been a focal point for years, which saddens older generations in Kannapolis, including Ernest Gene Brown.

“We don’t want to lose our roots,” says Brown.
“If they take this away than there’s nothing left to remind you of what the African American community was like,” he told Queen City News.

He has so many memories, especially inside what’s left of the former George Washington Carver High School—memories of pride, perseverance, excellence, and unity.

Through voices like Mr. Brown’s, we are reminded that preserving history is not about buildings alone—it is about identity, legacy, and honoring the generations who built community in the face of challenge.

KAA-MaCC proudly honored the Class of 2022 Hall of Fame, inclusive of Ernest Gene Brown at their 9th Anniversary Gala and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Laureate Center in Kannapolis on October 8, 2022.

Black History Month 2026 | A Conversation That Matters

This Black History Month, the Kannapolis African-American Museum & Cultural Center (KAA-MaCC) is choosing reflection, education, and dialogue over a traditional public celebration.

In a special conversation, President & CEO Jacqueline Anthony and Cathy Curry Jefferson stand together—before the image of a future museum and cultural center in Cabarrus–Rowan Counties—to talk about why Black History Month is celebrated, why it still matters, and why its lessons are national in scope.

Black History Month exists to ensure that African-American history is not marginalized, forgotten, or confined to a single month. It affirms that Black history is American history—woven into education, industry, faith, innovation, and civic life across the nation.

That purpose closely mirrors KAA-MaCC’s Vision 2026 Initiative.

Just as Black History Month calls us to remember, learn, and reflect, Vision 2026 seeks to create a permanent home for those stories—one that will:

• Preserve local African-American history and culture
• Serve as an educational resource for students, families, and scholars
• Foster cultural pride, understanding, and community connection
• Strengthen tourism, economic vitality, and civic engagement in Cabarrus–Rowan

Both Black History Month and Vision 2026 are about visibility, truth, and access—ensuring that history is taught accurately, honored respectfully, and passed forward intentionally.

While there is no public celebratory event this year, the work continues. The conversations continue. The vision continues.

📌 Black history matters every month.
📌 Education is preservation.
📌 Vision 2026 is about building a legacy that serves everyone.
