Take a closer look at the intricate details of each moth’s wings in Kate Breakey: To the Dark and the Endless Sky. What reads from a distance as pattern and color becomes, up close, a mosaic of tiny, overlapping forms. Each moth is covered in velvety, iridescent, scales. These details show just how much complexity is held within each specimen, transformed by Breakey into something completely mesmerizing.
On view now—visit us Tuesday–Saturday, 11–5.

A closer look at the details: these images highlight the expressive brushwork and nuanced color that define Wilbur Niewald’s watercolor landscapes.. Up close, you can see how fluidly his hand moves between loose, gestural brushwork and more deliberate structure, capturing both immediacy and careful observation.

Wilbur Niewald: A Found Portfolio is on view now! Visit us Tuesday through Saturday, 11-5 to experience the full works in person.

In addition to her striking installation of 94 moth portraits, Kate Breakey: To the Dark and the Endless Sky also features a large selection of her orotones on view in our northwest gallery. Breakey reimagines the process popularized in the early 20th century by Edward Curtis, reverse-printing the image on museum glass before backing with 24k gold leaf, giving them a radiant surface and unusual sense of depth. These images feature four of our favorite smaller orotones. Each one is especially luminous, with a richness and dimensionality that feels remarkable at such an intimate scale.

On view now! Visit us Tuesday–Saturday, 11–5. Check out Kate’s page on our website for all her work featured in the exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fantastic First Friday reception and opening weekend at Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art. Now on view: Kate Breakey: To the Dark and Endless Sky and Wilbur Niewald: A Found Portfolio. Breakey’s exhibition fills the gallery with a truly monumental installation of 94 luminous, larger-than-life moth portraits hung salon-style to create an immersive field of detail and pattern. In contrast, Niewald’s newly discovered watercolors offer a quiet, intimate look at a lifelong practice rooted in observation and experience.

Visit us Tuesday through Saturday, 11 - 5, and experience both shows in person.

We’re honored to share that our founder, Sherry Leedy, is featured in a recent KC Studio Magazine article highlighting women shaping Kansas City’s cultural landscape.

Thank you to Elisabeth Kirsch for this thoughtful piece and for including Sherry’s voice and long-standing contributions to the arts in our community.

We’re also proud to see gallery artist and local arts organizer Amy Kligman recognized in the article. Well deserved and deeply reflective of her impact both in and beyond the studio.

Give it a read and celebrate these incredible women; link in our bio!

We’re proud to share that gallery artist Tom Jones (Ho-Chunk Nation) is featured in Dear America: Artists Explore the American Experience, a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC - an exhibition that takes its title from Jones’s powerful photographic series Dear America (2002).

This 16-part work centers Native perspectives within the broader narrative of American history. His inclusion alongside artists such as Ansel Adams, Ruth Asawa, Gordon Parks, and Carrie Mae Weems underscores the significance of his voice within this landmark presentation.

On view April 11 - September 20, 2026, the exhibition brings together over 95 artists spanning more than two centuries of American art, exploring themes of land, community, and freedom as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Congratulations, Tom - we are honored to represent your work and thrilled to see it recognized on this national stage.

If you’re in or visiting Washington, DC, we highly recommend experiencing this exhibition at the National Gallery of Art.
