Established in 2012, Vulpes Bastille is currently home to nine practicing visual artists. The property was procured by Caranne Camarena, a KCAI Alum, who has successfully transformed the once empty building with the help of numerous friends and family. The building itself sits on the corner of Locust and 18th, and is easily identified by its orange facade. Vulpes Bastille was borne of the concern

Caranne and her fellow students at KCAI shared of where they would create art once they graduated out of their college studios. What started out as a project to provide affordable work spaces for young artists, VB has evolved into a fully furnished art studio and a spacious gallery, all geared toward providing young artists and students with a place to grow their artistic practices. Vulpes Bastille Studios consists of a spacious art gallery and a collection of studio spaces in a 6,300 square foot warehouse located in the Kansas City Crossroads district. This month in the Sub Gallery, we are proud to present Caro Carlisle's solo show Contranym.

Opening Friday, June 5 (6-9 PM).

The exhibition features mixed media paintings in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, with grounds that range from found traffic signs to raw wood panels.

"This work is built around my upbringing as a le***an in the deep south, investigating the ways class, identity, belief, and isolation intersect in this place.

Some of the images are sourced from family photos, others from snapshots sent to me by friends back home or from internet adventures.

Most of them come from the road. 

I've been a passenger on the same drive hundreds of times now: my childhood home of Little Rock, Arkansas, through Louisiana, into McComb, Mississippi. 

The car moves about 75 miles an hour. 90 if my dad is driving.

The paintings are made at the slow, drawling speed of this place and my memory."

This month, Vulpes Bastille is proud to present If I Told You, a collaborative exhibition by Isaiah Vazquez and Xavier Sylvia-Jackson that offers new perspectives on myth, history, and storytelling.

Opening Friday, June 5 (6-9 PM) 🔥🔥🔥

This expansive, multi-media installation features a wide range of ambitious painting and sculpture by the two artists.

Works are deeply multi-material, made with tracing paper, joint compound, concrete, charcoal, fabric, cardboard, and more.

How does one navigate a world where reality and myth have become indistinguishable?

What might we gain by giving into myth, and peeling back its layers to reveal deeper truths?

What artists Xavier Sylvia Jackson and Isaiah Vazquez present in If I Told You is a new perspective on the truth in myth, history, and storytelling based on their own experiences.

This evening is the reception for Making Do / Making Special, a one-night exhibition featuring 74 Kansas City area artists who are donating 186 pieces of original artwork to families served by Flourish: A Furniture Bank ().

Reception at Vulpes Bastille 5:30 - 9:00 PM with a presentation by Flourish Executive Director Amy Cox at 6:00 PM.

Flourish is Kansas City’s only furniture bank, providing complete home furnishings to more than 1,000 families overcoming housing insecurity each year through donations and volunteer service.

Co-organized by Julia Cole and Elinore Noyes, many of the works are framed with donated picture frames that have been refurbished by the artists.

Please join us on Monday, May 25 for a special one-night exhibition featuring 150+ artworks from more than 70 artists that will be donated to Flourish Furniture Bank, a local housing nonprofit.

When: Monday, May 25 (5:30-9 PM)
Where: Vulpes Bastille (1737 Locust St, KCMO)

Flourish is Kansas City’s only furniture bank, providing complete home furnishings to more than 1,000 families overcoming housing insecurity each year. Once families secure stable housing, they are referred to Flourish through a network of 90 social service agencies. At the showroom they personally shop for all the items needed to make their new house a home–totally free of charge.

By bringing together artists from across the Kansas City metro, this exhibition highlights the power of art as a social and political force, uplifting people in our community who have experienced violence, displacement, and loss.

At 6:00 PM, Amy Cox, Executive Director of Flourish Furniture Bank, will give a brief presentation about their mission and ways to get involved.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring high-need household goods and furnishings that will be donated to Flourish along with the artworks, including dishes, linens, and small electronics.

Tomorrow is our much-anticipated afternoon of artist talks with the 8 artists featured at Vulpes Bastille this month.

Join us Sunday, May 17 at 1:30 pm to hear from Kwanza Humphrey, Chico Sierra, Harold Smith, Wolfe Brack, Aaron Howell, Phil Dunn, Justin Canja, and Jaedyn Roberts.

In the main gallery, An Avoidant's Guide to Love is a collaborative exhibition of works presented by seven male artists of various ages, races, and sexual orientations that examines the topics of masculinity, avoidant behavior (craving closeness while also fearing it), how society can push men towards this behavior, and how they use art to accept it, combat it, and flourish, love, and connect in spite of it. 

In the sub gallery, Growing Pains is a solo show by Jaedyn Roberts that is an ode to an upbringing in the American heartland, a collection of intimate moments, and a declaration of love so deep it's the closest thing you have to religion.

This Sunday, May 17 at 1:30 PM, Jaedyn will be giving an artist talk along with the 7 artists in the main gallery. Don't miss this special afternoon — our last gallery open hours before both shows come down!

Growing Pains are a normal part of becoming someone new.

This work is in equal parts a celebration of human connection and a reflection on homesickness for things that won’t ever come back. It is an ode to an upbringing in the American heartland, a collection of intimate moments, and a declaration of love so deep it's the closest thing you have to religion.

Through highlighting everyday moments and everyday things, this exhibition explores the complicated ways we define home.

Vulpes Bastille is pleased to announce Making Do/Making Special, a one-night exhibition featuring more than 70 artists to support Flourish Furniture Bank.

Flourish is Kansas City’s only furniture bank, providing complete home furnishings to more than 1,000 families overcoming housing insecurity each year. Once families secure stable housing, they are referred to Flourish through a network of 90 social service agencies. At the showroom they personally shop for all the items needed to make their house a home, completely free.

All 150 artworks in the exhibition will be donated directly to Flourish, and families will be able to select their favorites to beautify their homes. Many of the works are framed with donated picture frames that have been refurbished by the artists.

By bringing together artists from across the Kansas City metro, this project highlights the power of art as a social and political force, uplifting people in our community who have experienced violence, displacement, and loss. Both the exhibition and the engagement leading up to it honor the role art plays in everyday life.

Members of the public are invited to view the work on Monday, May 25 from 5:30 - 9:00 PM at Vulpes Bastille (1737 Locust St, Kansas City, MO 64108). At 6:00 PM, Amy Cox, Executive Director of Flourish Furniture Bank, will give a brief presentation about their mission and ways to get involved.

Kansas City Art Community! Vulpes Bastille urgently needs your help. LINK IN BIO. 👁️👄👁️

Vulpes Bastille studio and art gallery was created to ensure there was a place for aspiring artist and recent art graduates to create and display their work. We have managed to modestly keep the doors open for several years, but now the doors themselves have deteriorated. We need to replace the doors to our 100-year-old building that houses 12 artist studios and 2 gallery spaces.

Age and damage make it necessary to replace the doors. The 16 foot non-insulated industrial back garage door has worn beyond repair. The resulting leaks have caused massive losses in heating & cooling. Rising utility bills have strapped this artist run space financially. The heavy wooden front entrance door is worn, saggy and difficult to even open.

Replacement of these doors will save Vulpes Bastille hundreds in future utility cost. Additionally, the upgrade will improve safety of the entire building, providing a fire exit in the back and adding another accessible entrance.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help cover the cost of the needed building improvements, 100% of the funds raised will go directly t. Read oo the building infrastructure. Ensuring the future longevity of Vulpes Bastille and its commitment to serving artists in the East Crossroads Arts District.
