This week, we installed our next show in the gallery, and it is absolutely stunning. The Divine Darkness is a solo show from traditional printmaker Lauren Stevens, featuring a collection of her MFA thesis work as well as illustrations she created for a project with Poor Bishop Hooper.
In this body of work, Stevens masterfully explores the uncanny, dreamlike world of the prophets and apocalyptic literature, where the Spirit speaks in images that often feel distant and unfamiliar to modern readers. Stevens brings these images to life, infusing them with all the weird, wild wonder of a world that is being made new in visible and invisible ways. It is a world where humanity is one among many kinds of creatures created to worship and praise God, whose wisdom holds it all together.

Today and tomorrow, we’re installing our next show in the gallery, and we’re so excited about this one! We’re welcoming back Lauren Stevens, for a solo show titled The Divine Darkness. In 2022, Lauren was a part of a two-person show in our gallery, alongside Emily Cramer. Our permanent collection also features two copper etchings by Lauren, which are installed on either side of the stage in our worship center. It’s a joy to welcome her back, and we hope you’re as excited about this show as we are!

Announcing our next exhibit, "The Divine Darkness," which will be opening next Friday, June 5. In this solo show, traditional printmaker Lauren Stevens invites us into spaces of wonder and hope, referencing images from prophetic books like Isaiah that imagine the restoration of order in a cursed world. Stevens seeks to balance personal devotion, worship, and lament in her highly intricate works, inviting us into a Spirit-filled, dreamlike world reminiscent of the Psalms. Please join us for a glimpse of the beauty of God’s story, which we hope will inspire and encourage you in your faith.
We will be hosting an opening reception on Friday, June 5, from 5:30-9pm, with an artist talk at 6:30pm.

Join us for open hours tomorrow, from 2-4pm! For the month of May, our gallery has the joy of hosting Sarah McMurry, a fiber artist completing her degree at KCAI this month. Her work beautifully balances solidity and translucency, revealing the inner strength of quilts, and we're honored to exhibit it for the month of May. However, it will only be here for one month, so please make a plan to come out and see it in person before our next exhibit!

In Nine Cedars, fiber artist explores her own family history in a series of nine small quilt panels, named after the family home built by her father. As with all her work, it flits between solidity and translucency, and reveals the inner strength of each quilt to the viewer. Suspended from the ceiling, the panels sway in response to the slightest breeze, seeming to come alive and celebrate their place.

Every May, we have the joy of welcoming a graduating senior from the Kansas City Art Institute’s fiber department to our gallery for their senior show. This year, we’re thrilled to be exhibiting the work of Sarah McMurry, who uses the format of the quilt to explore familial resilience and fragility given its place as an heirloom. With an emphasis on natural materials, Sarah’s work revolves around the colors and pigments from natural dyes as they speak to both global history and personal lineage. In her work, she uses variations of mordant painting, stitching, nuno-felting, and knitting to deconstruct the quilt.
In Tandem, Sarah’s senior show, will be in our gallery for the month of May, with an opening reception on May 1 from 5:30-9pm.

It’s always such a joy to welcome a new artist into our space, and it’s especially sweet in May. For the last nine years, Four Chapter Gallery has partnered with the Kansas City Art Institute’s fiber department to provide an exhibiting space for one graduating senior. This year, we’re so thrilled to be hosting , who uses the medium of quilting to examine and redefine what it means to be strong. Her quilts dance playfully back and forth between traditional patterns and freestyle compositions, making visible the inner structure of a quilt through the use of materials such as silk and organza. Sarah’s quilts are ethereal yet structured, and often provide a tender window into stories from the artist’s own life and family history.
In short, we’re all swooning over her incredible work, and can’t wait for you to see it in person! We’ll be hosting an opening reception this Friday from 5:30-9pm, with an artist talk at 6:30pm. We hope to see you there!

We will still be open tonight from 5:30-9pm for our closing reception of Chagall and the Bible! We’re keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, but we’re fully prepared to weather the storm surrounded by historical art, delicious snacks, and friendly faces. However, in order to give people more time to get downtown, we will be moving the talk back half an hour, to 7pm.

04/16/2026

This Friday, April 17, we’ll be hosting a closing reception from 5:30-9pm for our current exhibit: Marc Chagall and the Bible. (We’ll still have a few weeks of open hours after this event, but this will be our last formal event.) Our curator, Kelly Kruse, will be giving a special lecture at 6:30pm, sharing more about the life and work of Marc Chagall, as well as his historical significance as an artist. No need to register, just show up and soak it all in!
