Happy , and Happy Birthday to us! The Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum turned 24 years old on Saturday. We had some good times this year. We clowned around at the George Ranch, celebrated career milestones with our staff, and made some new friends at Scout Pack 1002. Do you have a favorite memory of the museum? Please share it with us in the comments, and stop by the museum to wish us a Happy Birthday!

Happy ! Have you been by the museum lately to see the work we’ve been doing on our model train set? Our volunteers, Richard and Carter, have been hard at work on improvements and additions. The UP1988 engine has been converted from incandescent lighting to LED; the steam engine has had its smoke unit replaced; and we’ve built a 6-foot by 5 ½-foot expansion table, adding on to the 8 x 8-foot expansion we constructed late last year. We have a lot of additions planned, so keep checking back!

The Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum and MKT Depot Museum are open Thursday-Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. To schedule a group tour, call 281-578-7461. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Happy ! Katy’s MKT Depot Museum is one of our city’s defining landmarks. Last year, the Depot attracted visitors from 39 U.S. States, and 25 countries.

To better welcome our international audience, the MKT Depot Museum is proud to announce that we now offer visitor guides in four languages other than English: Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Mandarin. These two-page writeups were made with the assistance of native speakers and provide an overview of the museum and Katy’s history. Additional languages are in development.

¡Bienvenidos!

Happy ! School may be out for the summer, but we’ll be having fun all summer long at the City of Katy’s museums! Earlier this month, we made some new friends from Cub Scout Pack 1002, who came to the museum to earn their Texas Badge. It was a great learning experience for us, too, and Cubmasters Jonathan and Regenia Washington-Redmon also presented a badge to the museum staff.

Church groups, senior centers, scouts, kids’ camps, and more are all welcome at the museum. There is no charge for tours, and we can accommodate groups any day of the week with prior notice. To schedule a tour of the Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum and/or the MKT Depot Museum, please call 281-574-8618.

Happy ! This week, the City of Katy is recognizing Texas Flood Awareness Week. We’ve had our share of bad luck with flooding here at the museum, as have many of you.

Hurricane Harvey had a big impact on the museum. The Katy Heritage Museum flooded and was closed from August 24, 2017, to April 12, 2018. It was a hard time for all of us. The people of Katy lost homes, businesses, and loved ones. Traces of the damage can still be seen in the museum today. Our 1940s library desk, Clardy Hotel dining table, coffee bin from the Robertson General Store, and several other wooden items all have visible waterlines.

Featured in this post are behind-the-scenes photos of the flooding at Katy City Hall, showing standing water in the City Council chamber as late as August 29th.

Next year marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. Would you like to see an exhibit on Harvey at the museum? Let us know in the comments.

Happy ! Summer is just around the corner, and we’re taking reservations for group tours. Church groups, senior centers, kids’ camps, scouting groups and more are all welcome at the museum. Last week, we welcomed some new friends from Amazing Place’s new Katy campus.

Amazing Place was founded in 1996 by Rev. Dean Robinson, son of Katy’s famous FFA teacher, L.D. Robinson. Amazing Place provides programs and support to people diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Dementia, as well as guidance and support for caregivers.

On this , we’d like to take a moment to remember a tragic event in U.S. history, the Kent State shootings, which took place on May 4, 1970. Four students were killed and nine wounded when National Guardsmen opened fire on protesters.

The events at Kent State University, in Ohio, took place against a backdrop of antiwar protests, following the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia in late April. In the days that followed, protests were held at nearly 900 U.S. high schools and colleges. Like their peers around the country, Katy’s students would have been keenly aware of events surrounding the war and the potential impact on their own future.

The following year, the Katy High School yearbook featured a tribute with a photo of the Kent State protest by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John P. Filo, himself a student at Kent State on the day of the shooting, and a poem by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg.

Our collection of Katy High School yearbooks, spanning 1939-1986, is available to researchers.
