Happy ! School may be out for the summer, but we’ll be having fun all summer long at the City of Katy’s museums! Earlier this month, we made some new friends from Cub Scout Pack 1002, who came to the museum to earn their Texas Badge. It was a great learning experience for us, too, and Cubmasters Jonathan and Regenia Washington-Redmon also presented a badge to the museum staff.

Church groups, senior centers, scouts, kids’ camps, and more are all welcome at the museum. There is no charge for tours, and we can accommodate groups any day of the week with prior notice. To schedule a tour of the Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum and/or the MKT Depot Museum, please call 281-574-8618.

The Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum and MKT Depot Museum are open Thursday-Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. The VFW Post 9182 & Auxiliary - Katy, Texas Katy Veterans Memorial Museum is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 2pm. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Happy ! This week, the City of Katy is recognizing Texas Flood Awareness Week. We’ve had our share of bad luck with flooding here at the museum, as have many of you.

Hurricane Harvey had a big impact on the museum. The Katy Heritage Museum flooded and was closed from August 24, 2017, to April 12, 2018. It was a hard time for all of us. The people of Katy lost homes, businesses, and loved ones. Traces of the damage can still be seen in the museum today. Our 1940s library desk, Clardy Hotel dining table, coffee bin from the Robertson General Store, and several other wooden items all have visible waterlines.

Featured in this post are behind-the-scenes photos of the flooding at Katy City Hall, showing standing water in the City Council chamber as late as August 29th.

Next year marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. Would you like to see an exhibit on Harvey at the museum? Let us know in the comments.

Happy ! Summer is just around the corner, and we’re taking reservations for group tours. Church groups, senior centers, kids’ camps, scouting groups and more are all welcome at the museum. Last week, we welcomed some new friends from Amazing Place’s new Katy campus.

Amazing Place was founded in 1996 by Rev. Dean Robinson, son of Katy’s famous FFA teacher, L.D. Robinson. Amazing Place provides programs and support to people diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Dementia, as well as guidance and support for caregivers.

On this , we’d like to take a moment to remember a tragic event in U.S. history, the Kent State shootings, which took place on May 4, 1970. Four students were killed and nine wounded when National Guardsmen opened fire on protesters.

The events at Kent State University, in Ohio, took place against a backdrop of antiwar protests, following the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia in late April. In the days that followed, protests were held at nearly 900 U.S. high schools and colleges. Like their peers around the country, Katy’s students would have been keenly aware of events surrounding the war and the potential impact on their own future.

The following year, the Katy High School yearbook featured a tribute with a photo of the Kent State protest by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John P. Filo, himself a student at Kent State on the day of the shooting, and a poem by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg.

Our collection of Katy High School yearbooks, spanning 1939-1986, is available to researchers.

Happy ! It takes a lot of work to keep our collection of antique vehicles and farm equipment in working condition. This week, the Official - City of Katy Fleet mechanics are replacing an inner tube on our Model T Touring Car.

Changing the wheels and tires on a Model T is a bit different from a modern car. According to FordModelTRepairs.com, Ford tried to make the process easier in 1919 by introducing a new wheel design with removable rims, which attached to the wooden wheel using nuts and bolts. This allowed drivers to more easily stop and change a flat on their own, using a spare pre-mounted to an outer rim; you didn't have the take the whole wheel off. This was a huge quality of life improvement in a time when cars were still sharing the road with horses, each with 8 – 10 nails in their hooves.
