🎉🇺🇸 Happy Birthday, General James Kenan! 🎉

Today we celebrate the birthday of one of Duplin County’s own — General James Kenan (1740–1810). He was a true hometown hero who stood up for freedom during the American Revolution and gave so much of his life in service to his neighbors and community.

From leading North Carolina troops as a Brigadier General, to helping shape our state as a delegate and legislator, to serving right here at home as sheriff, General Kenan always put duty and people first.

His courage and leadership still inspire us today. 💙 On his birthday, we remember not just the history books, but the heart of a man who loved his county, his state, and his country.

Here’s to you, General Kenan — thank you for paving the way for future generations! 🙌

Imagine the quiet little town of Kenansville suddenly becoming the center of national attention. On this date, the young and elegant Mary Lily Kenan was at her Aunt’s home, joined by none other than Henry Flagler, the famed railroad tycoon.

Word had spread of the pair’s union, and before long, reporters and photographers swarmed the sleepy streets of Duplin County. What had always been a quiet little town was suddenly bustling with the flash of cameras, carriages rattling by, and newspapermen scribbling furiously, eager to capture the story of the century.

Neighbors peeked from their porches, children craned their necks from dusty roads, and locals marveled at the paparazzi who’d traveled hundreds of miles just to catch a glimpse. What seemed ordinary—a family gathering in Aunt Annie’s parlor, it was Annie's 53rd birthday —was, in truth, history unfolding.

For Kenansville, that day was unforgettable: the world’s spotlight turned on a quiet little town, forever linking it to one of the most talked-about love stories of the Gilded Age.

Dear Friends,
Due to road conditions, Duplin County deems it wise to keep the museum closed on Friday, January 24, but we hope to reopen on Saturday. In the meantime, enjoy this wintry picture taken by Braswell Home Improvements and repairs . Doesn't the museum look dazzling in the snow?
