Join prolific Georgia artist Susan Cofer, Dean Arthur Liou, and Lead Museum Docent and Art Education student, Morgan Bennett, for an intimate conversation exploring the rituals of creative process, the role of process and uncertainty in making, and the continual becoming of an artist. Together, they will reflect on how sustained practice shapes not only the work we create, but who we become through making.

Ruth V. Zuckerman explored many artistic mediums including painting, printmaking, photography, and assemblage, but chose stone carving to bring her works to life. She spent much of her artistic career in Pietrasanta, Italy, where she sought out materials for her sculptures and connected with master stone carvers. Her carved works feature themes of family, love, and protection. Ruth Zuckerman died in Atlanta in 1996, and in 1997, Kennesaw State University did a major retrospective of her works from 1956-1993. In 1999, her husband Bernard A. Zuckerman, the namesake of our museum, donated 97 of her bronze and marble sculptures, and photographs to our permanent collection. Today, you can see many of her works in ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ in our acclaimed Ruth V. Zuckerman Pavillion, on the second floor of the Zuckerman Museum of Art.

This careful selection of artworks and their physical arrangement within the gallery is guided conceptually and visually by three major themes: Spirituality, Materiality, and Resilience. These topics are uniquely represented in the diverse concepts and varied media on display โ€”the works of artist Renรฉe Stout explore the personal nature of faith and embody spirituality by considering the unknown, the feminine, and the mystical as being divine; the work of Dontรฉ Hayes interrogates labor and process as being conceptually fundamental to the materiality of his poised and powerful physical artifacts; and finally, in If All Else Fails, Carrie Mae Weems portrays resilience in the repurposing of nautical signal flags as a gesture of solidarity as well as a cautionary preparation for unrest. This exhibition highlights the enduring strength of African Americans as exemplified by their lived experiences.

Free and open to all to attend!
