The U.S. Navy Nurse Corps was established on May 13, 1908, but women had been working aboard Navy ships and Navy hospitals for nearly 100 years. During the American Civil War, a Navy Department circular order established the designation of Nurse, which was a position initially filled by junior enlisted men. During the Korean War, Thomas J. Hudner Jr. watched his wingman, Ensign Jesse Brown, crash behind enemy lines after taking heavy fire. Refusing to leave him behind, Hudner deliberately crash-landed his own aircraft on frozen mountainous terrain surrounded by enemy troops.

With flames spreading through the wreckage and temperatures below zero, Hudner used his bare hands to pack snow around the cockpit and fought desperately to free Brown. Even after calling for rescue support, he remained by his friendโ€™s side until help arrived.

Though Brown could not be saved, Hudnerโ€™s extraordinary courage and devotion to a fellow serviceman earned him the Medal of Honor. https://bit.ly/3R5zsR8

The Origin of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a time to pause, remember, and honor the brave service members who gave their lives in service to our country. We are sharing a May 2021 blog https://bit.ly/4d4pt5X that reflects on the meaning of this day and the importance of carrying its legacy forward through remembrance.

Join us on May 23 for PMML free Memorial Day programming as we come together in gratitude and reflection to honor our fallen heroes. Please preโ€‘register so we can ensure we have enough supplies for everyone. Everyone who preโ€‘registers and attends our Memorial Day program will receive a free admission ticket to view our next exhibit in June.

We hope you will spend this meaningful day with us as we remember, reflect, and honor together. https://bit.ly/4u4eWPE USO Wisconsin National Women Veterans United Military Women's Memorial Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce

James C. McCloughan repeatedly ran into open fire over three days in Vietnam to rescue and treat wounded soldiers. As his unit came under repeated ambush near Nui Yon Hill, he moved through heavy enemy fire to pull casualties to safety, treated the injured under direct attack, and returned again and again into the kill zone despite being wounded himself.

When the fighting intensified and enemy forces surrounded their position, he continued evacuating the wounded, holding critical positions, and even exposed himself in the open to mark resupply drops so his unit could survive the night. Bleeding and under fire, he still refused evacuation until every possible Soldier had been cared for and accounted for. His gallantry and intrepidity were decisive in saving lives during some of the battleโ€™s darkest moments. https://bit.ly/49dLG0a

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty, Ryan M. Pitts distinguished himself on July 13, 2008, at Wanat, Afghanistan. Struck by shrapnel as enemy forces overran his position, he took control and returned fire. Unable to stand and near death, he kept fighting, throwing grenades as the enemy closed in. With insurgents just yards away, he crawled to the radio and directed fire support that helped stop the assault and save his unit. His gallantry and intrepidity and heroic conduct reflect the highest traditions of military service. https://bit.ly/4sXsPxy
