On April 30, 1968, Capt. James Livingston led Company E in a determined assault on the heavily fortified village of Dai Do, maneuvering 500 meters across open rice paddy under intense enemy fire. Despite being wounded twice by gr***de fragments, he continued directing the attack, helping his Marines destroy more than 100 enemy bunkers and drive the enemy from their positions.

When a counterattack threatened nearby Marines, Livingston moved forward again, joining the fight and helping halt the enemy advance. Wounded a third time and unable to walk, he remained in the exposed area until his men were moved to safety. Only then did he allow himself to be evacuated.

His actions earned him the Medal of Honor and exemplify extraordinary courage, leadership, and devotion to duty.

CW5 Phyllis Wilson, USA (Ret.), will be honored as the 2026 Founderโ€™s Award recipient at the Liberty Gala. CW5 Wilson served 37 years in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer and deployed to Iraq multiple times with the Joint Special Operations Command. Chief Warrant Officer Five Wilson was the most senior warrant officer in the Army Reserve, where she helped manage more than 200,000 personnel. While flying a surface-to-air missile suppression mission over North Vietnam, Lt. Col. Leo K. Thorsness destroyed two missile sites before his wingman was shot down. Despite critically low fuel, Thorsness returned alone to protect the rescue effort, attacking four MiGs and driving them away from the downed crew. His extraordinary heroism and self-sacrifice earned him the Medal of Honor.
