𝗛𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲.
During combat operations in Vietnam, Lt. Cmdr. Thomas G. Kelley commanded a column of river assault craft caught in a Viet Cong ambush. When one craft became disabled, Kelley maneuvered his own monitor directly into the enemy's line of fire to protect it. Seriously wounded by a rocket blast, he continued directing his men through one of his crew until the attack was silenced and the boats reached safety. His “extraordinary courage under fire and selfless devotion to duty” sustained the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

𝗛𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴.
On August 26, 1967, Col. George “Bud” Day was shot down over North Vietnam, suffering multiple injuries before being captured and severely tortured. He escaped and made his way toward South Vietnam, surviving on berries and uncooked frogs before being recaptured. Despite his injuries and declining condition, Day continued to resist his captors and provide false information, helping protect fellow aviators still fighting the enemy. His “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity” reflected the highest traditions of the U.S. Air Force.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲, 𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱.

Petty Officer Michael Thornton was serving as a U.S. Navy adviser alongside a Vietnamese Navy SEAL patrol in Vietnam when the patrol came under heavy enemy fire. After learning that his senior adviser had been wounded and left behind, Thornton returned through the fire, fought off two enemy soldiers, and carried the unconscious officer to the water’s edge. He then inflated the officer’s life jacket and towed him through the water for approximately two hours until they were rescued. Thornton’s actions saved the life of his fellow sailor and helped bring the entire patrol safely out of danger.

𝗛𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱.
Then-1st Lt. Jacobs was serving as an adviser in Vietnam when intense enemy fire halted his unit’s advance. Wounded by mortar fragments and suffering from severe head wounds, Jacobs assumed command and organized a defensive perimeter. Despite his injuries, he repeatedly crossed open rice paddies under heavy fire to evacuate wounded soldiers and advisers, provide lifesaving first aid, and confront enemy squads searching for the wounded. His extraordinary heroism saved the lives of one U.S. adviser and 13 allied soldiers and helped restore the company as an effective fighting unit.

Capt. Jacobs’ courage earned him the Medal of Honor and reflected the highest traditions of military service. He was also a recipient of PMML’s 2022 Citizen Soldier Award bit.ly/4dDKxkK. This Saturday, September 19, we will honor our 2026 Citizen Soldier Award recipient at our annual Liberty Gala, celebrating those who continue to serve their communities and country.
