"The Bedford Columns form what I would call a 'spiritual circle.' They look like they came out of each other. They fill the space with silence."
Beverly Pepper

to our exhibition "Beverly Pepper: Spiritual Circle," which was our first show in our current gallery space in 2019. Spiritual Circle highlighted Pepper's longterm engagement with totemic sculpture, a form she returned to throughout her career, in both indoor works like the Messengers and large scale outdoor sculptures like the Bedford Columns.

"When I stood them up they were very silent. They had a kind of space around them I couldn't understand. It surprised me. I could feel it. A mystical space that develops between the viewer and the work."
Beverly Pepper

Spiritual Circle also included several works on paper and paintings, in addition to two rare early sculptures from the 1960s. Our exhibition coincided with the opening of the Beverly Pepper Sculpture Park in Todi, Italy, pictured in slide 8.

In recognition of Juneteeth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War, we are looking back our 2021 exhibition "Direct Action: Homage to Martin Luther King Jr."

In his eminent 1963 "Letter from a Birmingham City Jail," Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "You may ask: 'Why direct action? Why sit ins, marches, and so forth? Isn’t negotiation a better path?' You are quite right in calling for negotiation. Indeed, this is the very purpose of direct action… to foster such a tension that a community… is forced to confront the issue. My citing the creation of tension as part of the work of the nonviolent register may sound rather shocking. But I must confess that I am not afraid of the word 'tension.' … There is a type of constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth."

Our exhibition highlighted a 2007 portfolio and book by Faith Ringgold, which illustrates Dr. King’s letter with scenes of protests, segregation, and racial injustice alongside daily tableaux. The show included works created contemporaneously with the Civil Rights movement, as well as contemporary works that embrace the spirit of alternative action.

We're excited to see Reza Shafahi highlighted in Vulture this week by ! Saltz's article "A Persia of the Mind and the Loins" in explores the works in Shafahi's exhibition at and his recent monograph "Diary of a Gambler" published by .

In "Diary of a Gambler," explains how he turned to gambling after his career as a professional wrestler in Iran. When his gambling addiction and debts became a threat to his family, his son, the artist , encouraged him to start making art, which he credits with turning his life around. Shafahi now works in an immediately recognizable, surreal style that pays homage to ancient Persian culture.

We have been showing Shafahi's work since the 2020 , and continue to exhibit his work at fairs around the country. Shafahi's work is currently included in our group exhibition "Poetry for the Underdog."

"Now my game is built on joy. If I had not picked up painting, I’m not sure I could stand myself."
Reza Shafahi

Congratulations to Enzo Cucchi on his exhibition at Museo MAXXI in Rome 🔥 Curated by Luigia Lonardelli and Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, "The Poet and Musician" includes more than 200 works spanning a wide variety of media, including "paintings that are also sculptures, sculptures that continue in their foundations, drawings as books, [and] works and images that float in the exhibition space." The exhibition includes many recent works by the artist set in relation to works produced in the late 1970s, with no delineation between different periods of his work, creating what the curators have described as "as a path through [Cucchi's] poetic universe."

"My work is about refracted light, low water and the horizon line. There is a very old technique, incalmo, which is the joining of two pieces... You get an ellipse, or it doubles up, or the rim is folded inside and you get double color. All these things you only see because you are bringing the two walls together."

"[The scratch cards] were all over the ground. As we continued picking them up, we realized they were beautiful objects, because they each had someone’s signature. Everyone scratches them in a different way. Once you have amassed a collection, you start to recognize the same person's ephemera."
Adam Eckstrom, Ghost of a Dream

Currently on view — Ghost of a Dream: without a king, everybody wants some heaven 🎰💰🏆 Ghost of a Dream is a collaborative artist duo (Lauren Was and Adam Eckstrom) whose work centers on the ephemera of people's hopes and dreams.
