Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse The Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse is a 19th-century Columbia County building that served as a local single-room public school into the 1940s.

Recently awarded a "Preserve New York" Grant by the Preservation League of New York State, and a "Legends & Lore" historical marker by the New York Folklore Society and the Wm G.Pomeroy Fdn for the Kinderhook schoolteacher, Jesse Merwin, who was Washington Irving's inspiration for the character of Ichabod Crane in his story, 'Sleepy Hollow'.

r an Historic Structure Report. The schoolhouse was originally located at the corner of 9H and Fischer Rd; it was moved to the Luykas Van Alen house property in 1974 after the Kinderhook school district centralized, and restored to its 1930s appearance.
