This is AL posting. Have had some pictures I have been delaying posting as it has just been a sad time due to the passing of a great living historian, Kent Vining. We only learned of Kent's passing a few days after the May 2nd event where we saw him for the last time. I talked to him post event in the afternoon and he and "Little Bit" were packing up and he said that while the event was more demanding (my word) than usually due to the Friday deluge he had an enjoyable time. He has been a mainstay in the Vintage Camping displays, one of those unselfish leaders. Pretty much a legend for for most of us in the Central Texas region. "Old Sarge" created and maintained the page Bannerman's Camp Classic and Vintage Motor Camping Living History as well as attending and participating in many events. He had lost his tent the night before the event due to the wind but he still found a way to educate and entertain. Here are the pics that Jake Hellbach and Delores Taylor took of him on May 2. Little Bit has been taken in my Kent's family and is ok. If you took any pics of Kent and Little Bit at the event please share. RIP Kent

A lot more pictures of the event are coming. While the Airfield area was closed for planes, the DR1 and Canuck/Jenny were pulled out and started up. The T's of course survived the mud and were running, albeit over a shorter course to prevent damage to the RC area. The course they did run on will required some repair as well as a lot of tire washing. But T's were designed to be "rut runners". One almost got stuck on a curve but reversed itself out.

Original 1926 Model T Racer... Texas Style. This one was a VERY serious conversion. June Bug most probably before it was a Midget Racer might have looked similar to this but would have had a less sophisticated engine set up and a shorter 70" wheelbase as well as a "tail".

My goodness, check out this amazing 1926 shot of the McCathren Special race car, taken in Breckenridge, Texas by our old friend Basil Clemons and part of the truly AMAZING UTA Special Collections library archives. The McCathren Special was (and still is) a historic race car associated with the McCathren Motor Company, which was founded in 1923 by Earnest Raphael McCathren in Breckenridge, Texas, when he purchased Frost Motors and became the Dodge agency for the area. The car, was a Model "T" Ford racing vehicle which was driven by McCathren and featured advanced modifications for its time, including a crank-driven supercharger and parts from leading racing manufacturers, distinguishing it from typical "Saturday night specials". I read that Jim McCathren, the grandson of the original owner, has been involved in building a faithful replica of this historic car. I'd love to see it in real life.

And folks, if you're not following UTA Special Collections you really should be. They post a lot of great historical photos from their collections.
