This month's Photo Club happens Tuesday, October 20!

Slow Looking: A Conversation in Seeing w/ Liz Titone will explore the practice of slow looking with Tanya Marcuse’s current CPW exhibition, Woven | Deer: An Ecological Tapestry.

Staying with an image past the first impression, we notice what settles and what reveals itself over time. It opens a way of receiving what’s present, deepening our engagement with the images we’ve made and the ones we’ve yet to create.

After initial observations, we will listen for what others notice that we did not, and see what emerges during those conversations. In the process, we gather language, encountering alternative words and ways of seeing. Those observations can stay with us, finding their way into our notes, our conversations about photographs, and the images we make.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026. 6-8PM. FREE.
RSVP: https://ow.ly/81Fe50ZY5Q6

Liz Titone built a career around looking. An artist and museum educator for twenty years, she designs programs that invite people to look closely, stay curious, and let what they notice find its way into the images they make. Her photographic practice gives the materials room to lead, welcoming chance and surprise over control, and trusts that attention, given time, reveals what an image holds. Titone holds a B.F.A. in Photography from SUNY Purchase and an M.S.Ed. in Museum Education from Bank Street College. She lives in Kingston, NY.

Amazing news for CPW: father and son Charles and Aaron Traub have donated their legendary Traub Family Lens and Screen Arts book collection to the CPW library! With over 2,700 volumes, this donation is international in scope, focusing primarily on 20th and 21st century photography, with hundreds of key monographs and rare books of many specialties, such as Italian photography, New Bauhaus photographers, African and African-American photographers, and the so-called Kentucky Renaissance and the Lexington Camera Club, of which Charles Traub was a part.

Charles began acquiring these books in the late 1960s to support his development as a photographic artist and educator. Similarly, Aaron started collecting in the late 1980s as he pursued his own creative pursuits in design and the visual arts. One third of the library is from Aaron. Note that Charles, a noted photographer, founded SVA's graduate photography program in 1988, and will retire from it in the spring of 2027. The program will be discontinued at that point.

We are excited to share this extraordinary resource with our community. The CPW library is open by appointment; please email Adam Ryan ([email protected]) to schedule a time!

October 17th is going to be a great day at CPW: photographer Caleb Stein will host a one-day workshop, "Paying Close Attention, Attention," focusing on how the act of attention on one place or subject becomes a kind of ritual that enriches perception. The workshop starts by exploring Stein's experience photographing a Hudson Valley swimming hole for more than a decade, as well as other photographers' work, and then moves into looking at participants' work: photographers may bring prints, an iPad or laptop, or share files in advance for projection; no formal presentation is required.

Pia Paulina Guilmoth lives and makes art in rural Maine. She works with a 4×5 camera and various experimental analogue techniques. Her work is foremost about beauty and her experience as a trans woman in the small town she lives in. Her work is held in the permanent collection of SFMOMA. Pia released her third book in November 2024 with Stanley/Barker titled "Flowers Drink the River," which received the Jury’s Special Mention for the 2025 Paris-Aperture Book of the Year award. In 2024-2025 she had two major solo exhibitions open—one in London (Webber Gallery) and one in New York (CLAMP). In 2024 she won a Google/Aperture Creator Labs grant and a Peter Reed Foundation grant in photography, and in 2022 she was a MacDowell Fellow in Visual Arts. Pia’s fourth book, a collaborative project with Jesse Bull Saffire, titled Fishworm, was published with Void at the end of 2025. In the spring of 2026 Pia presented at the Forum on Contemporary Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Pia’s out-of-print monograph from 2021, At Night Gardens Grow, was re-issued in the summer of 2026 with Stanley/Barker.

Join us Saturday, October 3, 5-8 PM for our next Community Gallery opening! Organized by PHOCUS, Vassar College’s photography club and community darkroom, this exhibition of student work aims to explore the theme of “closeness.” RSVP https://cpw.org/exhibition/closeness-a-phocus-exhibition/

The photographs show a combination of friends, acquaintances, and strangers, places familiar and foreign, and attempt to answer such questions as: Can the relationship between subjects, or between subject and photographer, be discerned from a single static image? How does proximity of a camera to living subjects alter the nature of the moment that is captured? The selections represent an attempt to provoke a renewed engagement with the photographer-subject relationship.

PHOCUS, Vassar’s only student-run photography organization, works to create a broad and inclusive photographic community for students through biweekly meetings, critiques, workshops, guest lectures, and the publication of FIX, an annual photobook of student photography. PHOCUS also maintains the student-run Baldeck Darkroom, loans cameras, and aims to make photography more accessible to the wider student body.

AMPLIFY your impact on CPW! For the month of September, a generous supporter is offering a 2:1 match on all donations CPW receives, no matter the size! So, please, take this opportunity to give to CPW now. Click here to give: https://cpw.org/donate/

CPW is building a new kind of cultural institution in Kingston, a regional center for community engagement and artistic creation. Our exciting exhibitions, engaging public programs, thriving digital media lab, and affordable artists studios make CPW a fantastic place to visit, work, and learn.

Our very generous supporter has offered to triple all donations, meaning $50 becomes $150, $1,000 becomes $3,000 and so on. That’s a huge impact on a small community-based, artist-centered non-profit where entry is always free for all.

A few examples:
$50 ($150 to CPW): supports CPW’s free public programs and artist talks
$100 ($300 to CPW): helps to provide scholarships to CPW workshops and classes
$250 ($750 to CPW): underwrites the Community Gallery, in partnership with local groups
$500 ($1,500 to CPW): supports the Woodstock AIR Residency Program

Join us in making this 2 :1 match multiply CPW’s impact! If you like what we're doing, and are interested in helping us maintain our momentum, this a great chance to show it!

And come see for yourself the exciting ways in which CPW is moving photography and community forward. Click here to give: https://cpw.org/donate/
